Space Hole 2020, developed and published by Sam Atlas, is an experimental indie project that sits somewhere between a game and an interactive audiovisual experience. Rather than following traditional design principles with clear objectives, structured progression, or conventional mechanics, it leans into abstraction and sensory immersion. The player is placed within a strange, layered cosmic space—referred to as the “Space Hole”—and is left to explore, interpret, and navigate it largely on their own terms. This approach defines the entire experience, making it feel less like a goal-driven game and more like a digital environment meant to be observed and engaged with. The gameplay is intentionally minimal, focusing on movement, interaction, and exploration across a series of surreal and often disorienting spaces. Players traverse environments that frequently defy normal spatial logic, with shifting geometry and overlapping visual layers that make navigation feel unconventional. There is no strong sense of direction or explicit guidance, and progress is not always clearly defined. Instead, the game encourages experimentation, asking players to move through its world, interact with i…

Genuinely unplayable color vomit, and it pains me to say this. While Space Hole 2016 was a fun ball roller game with interesting visuals and cool music, and Space Hole 2018 - while worse due to the much larger scope that made it lose some of the charm and bad optimization - at least allowed you to see what you were doing most of the time and still had you puzzle out things, Space Hole 2020 had me checked out less than 10 minutes into the game. Multiple levels of an extremely distracting color nausea filter, with no direction, were already enough for me to not only have no fun, but also cause a splitting migraine which I almost never have. How anyone is supposed to play, much less navigate, around this game is a mystery. I understand this series just has psychedelic visuals and I appreciate a good or interesting art direction, but 2016 used these visuals in interspersed and interesting ways, 2018 overused them, and 2020 is, I suppose, the natural evolution where playing the game takes a backseat to feeling sick and navigation is almost impossible as a result. I really hoped this series would become better and more interesting after the intriguing 2016 game, but I guess I am just n…

Very dreamlike and surreal. I entered a trance-like state upon playing. Feels infinite and expansive with a visceral effect reminiscent of impossible physics and color beyond our senses. Will travel again........
