Spear of Destiny

If the 60 levels from the previous game weren't enough for you

Just like with my original Wolfenstein 3D review, this too is: a must play.

On my Wolf3d review I wrote that the game is mazy, little did I know that Spear of Destiny would triple that, and I'm not exaggerating. Since overall it's more of the same game, I'll try to keep it short. [b] Mission 1 (Spear of Destiny) [/b] - it's very stingy with health pick ups, but it makes for it with Mutants numbers. That's sarcasm, by the way. Honestly, though, the challenge was appreciated. [b] Mission 2 (Return to Danger) [/b] - it is a very blue campaign, and it has some extremely unfair levels with tons of bat-skinned Mutants and cheap enemy placement. Don't play on "I am Death Incarnate!", unless you enjoy a challenge. [b] Mission 3 (Ultimate Challenge) [/b] - still very mazy and blue, but the developers finally understood what makes the game fun. There's a ton of health and ammo pick ups sprinkled around the levels, so you get to mow down Nazis to your heart's content. It isn't any easier at all, though.

Then there's Spear of Destiny. It serves as another fascinating artifact of 1990s gaming that expands on the foundation of its predecessor. It seems like the standalone version is no longer available for purchase. Turns out, this original individual storefront page has been officially delisted because Bethesda consolidated their retro catalog, bundling the game directly into the main Wolfenstein 3D application. I purchased the Wolfenstein bundle eons ago back when it was sold as an entirely independent title, so it remains safely preserved. I did dive into it now seamlessly through the main Wolfenstein 3D download. Once you actually boot up this prequel campaign, the magic of the era hits you. It is mind-blowing how many hours of pure, unadulterated fun id Software managed to cram into a file size of under 15 megabytes. In an era where a single casual photo snapped on a modern phone can easily double that digital footprint, stepping into these tightly packed, secret-filled strongholds proves that data size has absolutely nothing to do with the scale of entertainment. I envy people who played this on release and are gaming to this day. What a journey this is.
