About Star and Serpent Solitaire

What is it?

Do you like classic solitaire and the tarot’s occult aesthetic?Star and Serpent Solitaire is a Klondike-style variant played with a 56-card tarot deck (with four extra Page cards) and 3-card deals, built for long-term play.

Unlimited Free Demo

Try the demo for as long as you like. Gameplay and content are the same as the full version; the demo adds a brief reminder message on launch and does not include Steam achievements. Wishlist to get launch notifications and updates.

Key Features

  • Unlock the 22 Major Arcana that appear during play; win to unlock the card.
  • Get your fortune told on wins: a playful tarot-style reading tied to the featured Major Arcana card.
  • Earn gold and unlock content that carries over between games.
  • Collect treasures that build up in your Treasure Chamber over time.
  • Unlock a shop for upgrades and collectibles through progression.
  • Unlock a slot machine for “try your luck” rewards (gold and rare treasures) through progression.
  • Make it yours: change backgrounds and card backs (including your own image), and toggle visual extras on/off.
  • Optional Zen mode: distraction free experience with all markings disabled.
  • Separate profiles, achievements, and statistics.

Warnings, Before You Buy

  • This is a difficult variant of Klondike solitaire.
  • Try the free unlimited demo before you buy and see if the game suits you.
  • All games cannot be won. This game uses full randomness and resembles playing solitaire with physical cards. This is a risky design decision I took early on. Some computer solitaire players will not enjoy this.
  • 56 card deck winnability is approximately 6-10% lower than in regular 52 card Klondike solitaire.
  • In long term you can expect to win perhaps 10-20% of the games, depending on skill and luck.
  • There is no easy mode.

I like this game. It works well on Linux. I'm running Bazzite and have noticed no problems after dozens of games. I played it briefly on the Steam Deck but while it loads and works, the touch screen had difficulties moving the cards. So, hopefully they work on that.

Buy it - you won't regret it. This is one of the best quality solitaire games I have played on Steam (and I have played many of them). The premise of the game is a simple solitaire game but it is blended with the mysticism of the Tarot deck. The game has a definite aura that is highlighted in the beautiful music that accompanies each level. There is a store to buy goodies with your earned gold coins. This is run by a fairly unattractive imp. The whole feel of the game is fun, relaxing and also challenging. There are many achievements in place already. I have won the achievement for not double clicking any cards to move them. Some achievements are challenging, some are just a bit of odd fun. I'm waiting to see further developments as I get further into the game. I must beat Death. That's a goal.

Short version: My original review listed frustrations I had with what felt like a low % of winnable games. Developer's response was exceptionally thoughtful, and now that I understand what to expect, I'm no longer frustrated with the game and will continue to play. More context: I've played A LOT of solitaire variants and seek out difficult ones. For example, I spent what felt like days and days losing the hardest solitaire variant in the Zachtronics solitaire pack before I began winning on a regular basis. So my initial excitement of finally having a hard new challenge turned into frustration after several hours, not due to difficulty or because I was losing, but because of the high number of games that appeared unwinnable from the start. After an extremely thorough and thoughtful reply from the developer, it became clear I was applying some assumptions that just don't fit the game. I love that this developer made some strong, opinionated choices when crafting this game, and I'm going to invest more time now that I know what to expect. I'm looking forward to having a new solitaire to meditatively play before bed, and we'll see how well my win rate improves over a longer peri…

Years ago, when I was a graveyard shift security guard in a high-rise, I found a tarot deck in the office. Bored for hours at night, I used it to create a unique version of solitaire to pass the time. So, it's kind of cool seeing someone develop a game with a similar idea. While this doesn't play the same as the game I created, it's still a lot of fun and channels the same feeling I had back then, just trying to stay awake and sane through the long nights - protecting hundreds of sleeping boomers above me. All in all, this is well-made and fun to play. It essentially plays like a 3-draw klondike game, except for the page card being added to the mix (it fits underneath a jack and above a 10). Now at my current job, when bored, I can shift back in time to that old job and my method of making the night less dull.

Good and fun Solitaire. Played the Demo for 4 hours straight an had to get the game to say thank you for not beeing greedy. Developer having the confidence to offer the full game in the demo is remarkable! Great game, get it!
