About Stories from the Outbreak

The year is 2020. A new virus – the New Death – has begun turning people into violent zombies. The government has collapsed, and a brutal paramilitary group has taken control over most of Latvia. The streets are not safe, and the police or army will not protect you.
You turn the radio on. The military is announcing that one last ferry will be heading out to Iceland from the western shore. Escape will be granted to those with enough fuel for the entry fee, and enough courage to attempt the journey across zombie-infested Latvia.

Stories from the Outbreak is a turn-based roguelike zombie RPG. The combat is heavily strategic, allowing customisation in team composition and character progression, and the game features dozens of trinkets that provide passive bonuses following the best roguelike design practices. Between combats, you must make decisions about traversing the landscape, and written events force you to navigate the moral complexities of surviving in a hostile environment.

Features

  • Form a team of survivors, each with unique abilities and personalities. Decide the fates of your team members as you go
  • A wide selection of trinkets and abilities allows creative approaches to strategy, and the random element of roguelikes keeps the game fresh through many playthroughs
  • Over 25 enemy types combine into hundreds of different encounters that will push your tactical thinking to its limits
  • Search for supplies and face moral dilemmas in an event system where your choices matter
  • Over 80 000 words of written content explore the lore of the Outbreak and the backstories of the various characters, and hidden surprises await even as you keep replaying the game
  • Late-game replayability is reinforced by unlocking new trinkets (permanent progression) and various challenge modes

In this brutal world, not all of the people are going to survive. Not every team is going to make it. This is how it is intended to be.

I've been playing since early access and I fell in love with this latvian zombie turn-based rougelike rpg from the first demo I played <3 I'm a bit of an addict, but I believe the game's rougelike loops are what keep me coming back, because the different synergies between characters make each run feel very distinct One thing that i don't particularly like is the asking price, which makes me not recommend as often as I do, however definitely get it on sale! I highly recommend it!! (Paldies par burvīgo spēli <3)

Fully released game from 2024; (last update was ; 19/7/24 Ver.1.1.2) It feels clunky, the UI is a bit all over the place, same thing as the enemy selection in battle, sometimes using the icon that appears on the top of the avalible target works, sometimes doesn't, the dialogue options are the same, sometimes you really need to click in the middle of the button for it to register. The battle system is akin to the one present on the Battle Chasers series, a timeline with a initiative bar that shows the turns and intentions of the enemies and your characters. There are no other language options apart from English. It has it's good things, the fact that you can cheese the whole game with a little planning and having the Doctor character (The one that gives CheatDeath to the whole team) + the poison centered character that can deal damage through armor is funny and makes the last boss a waiting game of managing Bleed/Poison and mantaining CD. There are a lot of synergies between characters, items and the events and lore have flavour. Its a challenging game that feels barebones, not worth the 20€ at all but would recommend at a price point around 7-12€ as far a replayability goes, it'…

What an amazing hidden gem of a game! Nice pixel art, nice atmosphere, nice mechanics. Straight forward on the surface but with a lot of synergies that can absolutely break the game but you really feel clever when you pull it off. The best thing about this is how well designed are these synergies between the characters. But it has some good writing as well, surprisingly for the genre and the scope of the game which is not very big. I have beaten this three times before losing, but I overthink every turn. I think bad reviews about difficulty are just skill issue players that do not read. If you are doubting just get it, good times.

game is a lot of fun its actually criminal how few people have played it. i rate it quite highly. its not as rougelite as youd expect more of randomised series of set events and locations in a semi random order. wish the leveling up was a little easier. never in any games have i ever gotten 4 inspiration points.

After having finished two playthroughs (out of three), I don't really feel any itch to continue playing. There's no progression that does anything for me. Going back for another run of more of the same isn't really calling out to me. I'm not saying it's a bad game. I actually like it. I just… don't really want to play it? Would probably be fire as a board game with a couple of friends.
