[h2]Mortal Engines From Temu in a Low-Poly Zombie Apocalypse[/h2] As the title suggests, the first thing that crossed my mind when looking at Survival Machine’s premise was Mortal Engines; a voluminous dieselpunk novel, later adapted into a (rather rushed) movie; a tale of enormous, moving machine-city-states that scavenge for resources and, in some cases, prey on each other. The idea of building, maintaining and upgrading my own, custom miniature ‘mortal engine’ while roaming a zombie-infested, post-apocalyptic world sounded promising, even if I wouldn’t be building a whole city, but rather a single house at best, nor be put against other ones in battle. Hence, the ‘Temu’ part; as in, a scaled-down, knockoff version of that baseline idea, that still remains a good concept unto itself, although not exactly novel. That premise was in part concretized as I roamed the wastes, progressively arming, expanding and fortifying my base to survive the zombie threat every few nights; however, it was also driven back by annoying bugs, a few questionable design choices and, above all, a lackluster challenge level even on the hardest setting available. It's too crude. Yes, there's a large mobile machine on which you can build your settlement, but that's it. Combat is casual, resources are plentiful, and progression is somewhat similar to mobile. The idea is good, but the gameplay is simple and monotonous. Many gas developers still can't understand why the inspiration, Valheim, is so captivating precisely because of the challenge of the surrounding world and its complexity. IC

I think people are really harsh with this game. This is an indie game that costs ~15€. For this price you get: - a functioning moving base that you defend once every 2 to 3 nights from waves of zombies. - A semi open world with a good amount of poi diversity that are resolved using little simple jumping puzzles and/or fighting off the zombies - a fun little story, nothing too complex but not boring in itself - specific map unique poi that require you to complete a certain number of steps to open the way for your machine (blow up a fortress, open some massive doors...) I just finished the first biome and I got to say the game is fine. I didn't have any connectivity issues and minimal bugs, nothing game breaking. This is a 15€ game from a dev that obviously cares a lot by the amount of reviews he has answered here. Sure there are better games and there are worst games. This is a good game and I'm having fun.

Game got stale real quick, building your machine is fun but the zombie waves are annoying which made me and my buddy quit quickly

I just finished the game this evening, clocking in at 67 hours. I played it exclusively solo. It has just enough pros to outweigh the cons to me, so I'll do a rundown. Great: - responsive devs who understand that not everyone likes Discord. They responded to posts in the Steam forums in a timely fashion, and, one of the bugs I found (also noticed by others), was patched within a few days. That's good effort. Good: + Nice music, and I love the little gramophones you can find to play little snippets of songs I'd like to see expanded into full-length songs. + Runs great on my decent, but not "top-class" rig + unexpected automation options available later on, though simple, were appreciated + decent variety of simple puzzles. My favorite was the cemetery with its small-scale "pay attention and LOOK around" style of information gathering to solve it. + We're rolling on a giant, slow train machine that we can build on, pretty cool + Generally rewarding resource collection. You get a decent amount of resources from busting one rock or one tree, not one or two "wood" or "stone" + automated turrets.
