The Antidote

This is one of those moments that I'd really wish Steam would offer the option for a "neutral" review, but we'll do with what we have. Coming from the newly sprouted developer team Innovative Underdogs, [i]The Antidote[/i] is their first game and the young developer team has been nothing but enthusiastic and attentive on community feedbacks - which is a praiseworthy sign. Our game is a P&C adventure, with a tip of hat to old school Sierra style; being intentionally ridiculous and challenging at all times. Is it enjoyable? Well, let's see. Let's start with one downside - and a big one for me: the story. Our protagonist, Roger leaves the office after a long day and being slightly ridiculed by his coworkers. The next thing he knows is that he gets smacked on the head and loses consciousness. As he wakes up, he finds himself in an old castle with a somewhat distorted, brightly colored environment. I usually like "Point and click" games but I found this graphic adventure disappointing for several reasons. I don't care so much about graphics, which here appears old obsolete, I also like old-style games with classic 2D graphics, but this Antidote has a very bad gameplay. IT is hard to find objects and use them, it's difficult to try your avatar on locations, where it is required to stop at a precise point. There is no real plot, you don't understand what needs to be done, and the puzzles have no logic; for example "you don't have to feed the well" but then you have to throw some objects inside it! I played for several hours but everything that appears flat, boring, non-emotional, is not comic or adventurous, it is not a pretty deep storyline and there are no characters to talk to, the game only sends me to the various locations just to examine and collect items to use and that's it. I think the aim of video games is to give us emotions and make us know beautiful stories, I'm sorry but this game lacks all these qualities. Bottom line at the top: I can only recommend this game if you are a true P&C lover with a lot of time on your hands (even though this is short) like me. Pros --------------------------------------- -Hallucinatory adventure game. Those three words definitely grab my attention -Mostly stable. No crashing. -Atmospheric Music. -Cool background art. -References a Skee-lo song in a dialogue joke (always a plus). -Funny dialogue when talking to random items/objects. -Crisp and easy to read text (minus the main character's, the white is hard to read on some backgrounds). -Has quick travel feature for going to different rooms on the fly. Meh --------------------------------------- -I like the design of the sprites, reminds me of Police Quest 4 from the Sierra Online days, however their movement is clunky. -This is one of those Adventure Game Studio titles that needs a little configuration fiddleing with when starting for the first time. -No voice acting. -No Steam Achievements. Didn't make sense, the plot was weak and characters were robotic and full of dad jokes. The only good thing in the game was the main menu's song, but even then it feels like this game didn't deserve such cool music. Almost impossible to finish without a guide.

Just finished the game and quite liked it. In the first case you start with no clue on the whole story, but as you progress the game becomes more fun (also a lot of inside jokes help to make it more fun to keep playing). I love puzzle games so I recommend this game to others who also like similar games. tip: it took me quite some effort and random clicking before I found out I could combine items and what to do with them. I recommend giving more clue's about this ;-) Thumbs up for an original and suprising story!

Fans of puzzles and point & click adventure games will find plenty to love here. The story is a bit on the odd side but given environment it works well enough, I was able to stay engaged for the majority of my time in the game. However given the story’s premise I feels if the developers could have actually went a little bit crazier with their ideas, for being on the hallucinogenic drug trip this seems fairly tame. The resolution of the game is a definitely a downside, I feel as if I'm losing detail in the environment in order to view the game comfortably with a large monitor. Now this might not affect everybody but it definitely Affects me. That being said however the environments are one of the major upsides to this game, they’re very surreal looking which help lend an air of mystery to the game Which Is accentuated by the ambient soundtrack. Personally, I would consider figuring out the control scheme for this game one of the first puzzles as I could not find anywhere any kind of tutorial for how those functions are mapped.
