About The Caligula Effect 2

✦ AI summary

The Caligula Effect 2 has you leading the Go-Home Club to escape a virtual world called Redo, where people live out idealized versions of themselves free from regret, by uncovering the truth about your allies' real identities while battling the world's creator. The game combines turn-based combat where you can predict future outcomes, deep character-driven storytelling that challenges your choices, and group chat mechanics that reveal hidden layers to each club member's past.

●STORYRedo - a world without regrets.
Regret - a mysterious virtuadoll.
Those who hear her songs find themselves transported into another world.
The world of Redo is a virtual world built from the regrets of many people.
"If only I'd done things differently..."
This is a world where everyone's secret desire to redo their lives can come true.
A place where they can become the person they would have been had they chosen differently...
Redo - a dull world with no regrets, where anyone can experience a life redone.
Another Songstress and the Go-Home Club
Another virtuadoll exists - χ. She seeks to destroy the false world of Redo.
She gives strength to the protagonist - who is slowly awakening to reality - as her chosen partner.
They form the Go-Home Club, gathering other members who have also found out about the world outside Redo.
Thus begins their arduous task of making it home against the will of the creator of the world.
Go-Home Club's True Selves
In Redo, members of the club are in their "redone" forms, which they have obtained by ignoring reality and undoing past regrets.
Their true selves are secret forms only the player can deal with.
Tread carefully and choose actions that will leave no regrets...

●CHARACTER STORIES
In the world of Redo, Go-Home Club members are in their "redone" forms - manifestations of past regrets that have been undone.
Each member is trapped in a situation dreadful enough to cause them to turn away from reality.
What happened to them? And why are they trying so hard to return to that painful reality? These are only some of the mysteries the player must unravel.
There is a chance you may find the members' true selves unacceptable.
So tread carefully and choose actions that will leave no regrets...
●BATTLES
Imaginary Chain
Chain combos in the battle system while predicting the future!
The battled system is turn-based. Once an action is selected, you can peer into the future and see what it looks like successfully executed.
Use this ability wisely to coordinate attacks with allies or cover them during bad situations.
χ-Jack
When certain conditions are met in battle, a χ-Jack is activated, in which χ's singing voice hijacks the battlefield and powers up the Go-Home Club.
The effects differ according to the song chosen. This move is powerful enough to completely turn the tide of battle.
Develop χ's abilities to improve the effects of a χ-Jack.

✦ AI summary

The Caligula Effect 2 stands out for its strong character writing and genuinely likable cast, alongside a unique combat system that many find engaging, though it struggles with production values and repetitive dungeon design that hold it back from greatness. Players consistently praise the localization, story depth, and how the game respects players' time with reasonable length, but note that animations, enemy variety, and side content feel underdeveloped due to budget constraints. Most reviewers suggest it's worth trying for JRPG fans willing to overlook its rough edges, particularly on sale.

The most significant improvement over the first game is that Caligula Effect 2 has a much better understanding of its characters. They're no longer a collection of exaggerated personalities that, at their worst, come across as simply edgy. Instead, they're people with believable struggles that explain why they ended up in Redo in the first place. This applies to both the Go-Home Club and the antagonists. The party, in particular, works much better because there's a genuine sense of camaraderie, and it's easy to believe these characters will remain connected even after the events of Redo. I also found myself smiling more than once at their banter, helped in no small part by the excellent localization. Some characters—especially 𝜒—are allowed to go completely off the rails, and I ended up liking them a lot. Even characters like Kobato, whose behavior initially seems questionable, receive enough context to make them understandable. Unfortunately, some story arcs are resolved a little too simplistically given the complexity of their underlying themes (Gin and Marie, in particular). The music once again plays a major role in this. The songs of the Obbligato Musicians aren't just back…

It’s a shame this game has gone so under the radar. Is it rough around the edges due to a tighter budget? Yes. But it’s got an incredibly unique combat system, an impactful and differentiating story, and an excellent cast of characters. It doesn’t outstay its welcome in length. I was incredibly surprised by how good this game was. Give it a chance if you’re a fan of JRPGs!
Story (7/10)
- Main story is okay. - Stories revolving unique characters (allies, enemies) are good (the setting of the world gives rise to characters with different "problems").
Graphics (5/10)
- Character designs are good. - Environment looks ok. - Animations (outside of battles) are stiff.
Gameplay (6/10)
- Cool battle system (Plan and Simulate) - Skill system is ok - description of skills can be more descriptive - Dungeons too long - Escaping a (normal) battle takes too long - Side Quests mostly not interesting (exceptions are the group quests which there are only a few) - Normal enemy variety is low
Sound (8/10)
- Almost all vocal unremixed songs are good. Some of them are still stuck in my head. However, since the dungeons are long, there is some kind of fatigue setting in. - Remixed songs are either hit or miss. - The rest is ok - Sound effects are ok
Performance/Configuration/Settings
- The controller often needs to be plugged out and then in again to be recognized - No crashes [Misc] In every way a better game then the previous game. It's actually good now.

Possibly my biggest disappointment this year. How does this have 91% positive reviews?!? It keeps being referred to as "low budget Persona" but frankly it's just low budget. There is nothing that even remotely resembles Persona. The story would be ok if the characters weren't so childish that it's impossible to take any of them seriously. The combat is boring and gets repetitive 10 times faster than in Persona, dungeon design is likewise boring and repetitive. There is just nothing here that I'd rate "good" or worth the price tag (thankfully I got it on a sale).
