About The Legend of Heroes: Trails into Reverie

What destinies await these three fateful figures? Use the Trails to Walk system to switch between Rean Schwarzer, Lloyd Bannings, and the masked figure "C", and determine the fates of key characters and locations within Zemuria. Dive into refined tactical combat with new features such as United Front, and discover new allies and challenges within the halls of the True Reverie Corridor!

About

Where one trail ends, another begins...

The intertwining fates of three figures in Zemuria will be decided in this climactic chapter of The Legend of Heroes series! Follow the footsteps of the war hero Rean Schwarzer, the liberator Lloyd Bannings, and the masked enigma "C", and switch between each of their paths freely with the Trails to Walk system.

- Lloyd Bannings, leader of the Crossbell Police Department’s Special Support Section, finds himself fighting for his city's freedom once again after Crossbell's independence celebrations are interrupted by the sudden reappearance of an old threat.

- Following the events of the Great Twilight, Erebonian hero Rean Schwarzer and his students return to life at the branch campus. However, this fleeting peace is disturbed by the emergence of a new threat.

- When the former governor general of Crossbell suddenly returns and lays claim to the city state, four figures carry out a secret mission to investigate his actions. Their leader is "C," a masked individual who seems to be using the same codename as the leader of the Imperial Liberation Front. But to what end?

Trails into Reverie was honestly way better than I expected! Switching between three different routes at the same time was a super fun mechanic. The constant cliffhangers can mess with the pacing a bit, but it’s totally worth it. Having Rean, Lloyd, and C at the center gives both the Erebonia and Crossbell arcs the proper send-off they deserved, and it handles the post-war fallout really well. The plot twists and side stories (LOOOREEEEE) in the Reverie Corridor are awesome too—getting to see what everyone was up to after the war through so many different perspectives added a ton of depth. As for combat, the new United Front system is a great addition since it gives you extra options outside of standard Crafts and Arts. I was on the fence about the Reverie Corridor at first, but going through it actually shifts how you level up and experience the game. And just like in Cold Steel IV, the playable roster is absolute massive. Overall, I had a blast with this one. A must-play for any Trails fan. See you again in S1208!

After taking a break from new Trails games for several years after Cold Steel IV burned me out in 2020, I decided to pick up Reverie to try and get back into the series. In between this, I had played through Trails to Azure using the Geofront translation. Azure was the last game I hadn’t played prior to Reverie, and I’m glad I played it because it had a lot of relevance to the story. My tl;dr is that Reverie is a massive mixed bag. I enjoyed my time with it in general, but there were several points that had me groaning and wishing the game would be over sooner. I'd give Reverie more of a mixed review than a positive one.
Story Stuff
Let’s start with the biggest barrier of entry to this game: You need to have played all 4 Cold Steel Games, and the two Crossbell games to properly understand the plot and characters in Reverie. The Sky games have a bit of relevance in Reverie, but I wouldn’t call them essential just to play the game. Reverie serves as an epilogue to Cold Steel and Crossbell, while also leading into the following arc, Daybreak. There are summaries included to recap you on previous games, but they’re not a total replacement for a proper playthrough. Al…

For a series as long as Trails, you would hope that the games would get better as you progress. In reality, it's really the opposite, and genuinely just feels like a money laundering scheme. They do not learn their lessons, and keep introducing new characters instead of fleshing out their older ones, alongside turning a good chunk of the existing characters to be nothing more than ego boosts for the MCs. This game also introduces a "new protagonist", C, who in my opinion, is genuinely one of the most unnecessary things ever. If you like games that follow a "friendship is magic" concept, it might be for you. Otherwise, anything this entire franchise offers, is outdone by another franchise who gives you much more satisfaction in a shorter period of time, and for lower cost.

The amount of times in these 25 hours so far I have said "WTF?" but also "Omg." "Hell yes!" and "This is amazing!" are incredibly high. What an absolute ride for the finale of this saga. No notes. 10/10 so far. Hits on every level with a genuinely engaging story that's super bingeable. I do love my gaggle of murder-children, tho. Man, that ending made me tear up. Can't wait to dig into what comes next (though it's hard to let go of everyone.) What an amazing ride, and a perfect send-off to Liberl/Crossbell (leave them alone!,) and Erebonia. PHEW.
