The Drawstring Dungeon is praised for its inventive deckbuilding mechanics, charming humor, and satisfying depth that rewards strategic combo-building and replayability through escalating difficulty levels. However, new players report a steep difficulty curve and poor onboarding, with some mechanics like the two-mana system and enemy UI being confusing or discouraging early on, though patient players who push through find a well-crafted game worth their time.
I would have preferred to see EA for this title, which is fun, but like so many other deckbuilders, is decidedly unbalanced against the new player. For the life of me, I've never understood why some devs seem to think that new players, who they're otherwise trying to impress, like to get their brains beaten in repeatedly when there are alternative games out there that give the new player a fair chance. Two mana for turns after the first is a real good way to get a new player discouraged in a New York minute. But as a veteran of the genre, I can positively say that the game is put together well enough otherwise to give the patient player a reason to play. It's just that at my age, I've got better things to do than watch mid-level first-tier bosses get attack bonuses the player can only dream of with declining mana to protect my character.2 found this helpful
A cool deckbuilder with a surprising amount of depth. Because you can add multiple charms to cards you can make game-breaking combos that allow you to obliterate every enemy, but only if you can get the right charms on the right card. With the ascension levels, the game has an ever increasing difficulty that you'll have to create better and better decks to beat. If you're looking for a new deckbuilder to get into, this is it!2 found this helpful
The Drawstring Dungeon is a surprisingly inventive roguelike deckbuilder that combines strategic card combat, customizable progression, and quirky humor into a highly replayable experience. Developed by Sleeper Build Studio, the game clearly takes inspiration from genre favorites like Slay the Spire while introducing enough unique ideas to establish its own personality. Instead of simply following the familiar formula of building a deck and surviving randomized encounters, the game experiments with player-driven enemy customization and card enhancement systems that make each run feel more personal and unpredictable. The gameplay revolves around exploring a strange dungeon filled with bizarre enemies, branching paths, treasure rooms, and increasingly dangerous encounters. Battles unfold through turn-based card combat where players use attacks, defensive abilities, status effects, and special powers to survive enemy assaults. While the basic structure will feel immediately familiar to anyone experienced with roguelike deckbuilders, the game quickly begins introducing mechanics that separate it from more traditional entries in the genre. The result is a combat system that feels strat…1 found this helpful
Played the demo for a few hours before buying. This is one of the best card games I've played. The mechanics remind me of a single player MTG. Onboarding is a little rough, but definitely worth sticking through it.1 found this helpful
This game is a super fun roguelike deck-builder. Great card variety, fun progression, cool art, and some nice humor sprinkled in. It really kept me hooked run after run. Only thing I'd like to see improved is the enemy UI — It took me a while to understand what attack enemies would intend to do :) Overall, a solid game. If you enjoy games like Slay the Spire, give this a shot. Definitely worth playing.1 found this helpful
Even for someone who isn't usually a fan of deckbuilders, The Drawstring Dungeon is infinitely enjoyable and easy to understand. Strongly recommend if you're a fan of the genre, or even if you're not.1 found this helpful
