✦ AI summary

The Fang attracts players with its mysterious atmosphere, monochromatic pixel art, and intriguing premise of exploring an abandoned facility, but is hampered by poor execution in core mechanics. The primary complaints center on awkward grid-based combat that heavily favors enemies, slow movement with extensive backtracking, unclear objectives, and a confusing world layout with no map. Additionally, players report technical issues including a bug that prevents chest interaction and an asymmetrical combat system where only enemies can attack diagonally, creating frustration that outweighs the ga

The Fang is an action-adventure game with light survival elements. I was drawn in by the intrigue of everything being a mystery and the monochromatic pixel graphics, but actually playing the game was equal parts frustrating and unsatisfying.
STORY
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2364577362 There is no concrete narrative. What I gleamed from the gameplay is that you are a man on some sort of mission in a facility of unknown origin and purpose. You make your way through the facility in an attempt to get to where the secret is held. You make your way past the various enemies and security bots and arrive at the secret- some sort of large device with a mysterious object contained within. You set your explosives and prepare to leave, but security catches you and you end up caught in the blast. I was very disappointed that the mystery was only a lure; there was no satisfying story anywhere. Story elements are practically devoid in actual gameplay and just reinforce the idea that the facility is old and mysterious. There are 5 eggs hidden in the game and destroying each gives an achievement; this is the closest we ever get to actual story. The only thi…

Combat is awkward. You are bound to a grid, but the grid isn't clearly visible, you can move diagonally, but only enemies can attack diagonally. Movement is very slow, and backtracking is required. Also your goal is never clear, so you will be constantly wandering around aimlessly at a slow speed. There are many branching paths, but no map. So you better have a good memory, but it's kind of hard to memorize a very generic world that all kind of blends together and looks the same. There is a bug where sometimes chests just cant be opened for no apparent reason. I confirmed this was a bug because after starting a fresh save file, previously unopenable chests suddenly worked, and some other chests that opened before could no longer be interacted with. I can't say for sure, but I think this resulted in softlocking my game because there was a big chest that i couldn't interact with, the game is so unclear though it's hard to say for sure if this is just some weird intended mechanic. There are a 3 seemingly pointless mechanics? -You have a stamina bar, but it didn't seem to affect anything or matter when it ran out. -You collect orb things that cap at 3 and then go away after a shor…

"The Fang" is an top-down action adventure game. Make way through an abandoned facility filled with mutant creatures! Explore the map and be careful of your stamina, health and energy. You get 2 weapons, a melee and a ranged. Various patterns of attack. If you re-enter a room, the enemies respawn. This is great because when you kill an enemy sometimes he drops an energy orb. You need 3 energy orbs (and you can only carry 3 at a time) to open chests that hold valuable items like health and stamina supplies. You can get poisoned by enemies or simply stress out of fear if your stamina reaches zero. There are a few save points that don't replenish your health and you have to remember the layout, differently prepare yourself for a lot of backtracking! It tries to create a fearsome atmosphere and a sense of true survival. I believe it managed to do that! It's neither too hard nor too easy. It could use some improvements like better explanation of the mechanics, an unlockable map, an actual story, weapon variety and more, but, all in all, it is an enjoyable title if you get past the learning curve. Fun top-down action game with nostalgic look and feel. The objective is to explore the mutant facility, move switches and find keycards for doors. You have a sword and a handgun with limited range but endless ammo as your only weapons. Because enemies are pretty fragile, eliminating them is simple. Slight annoyance is that you need to line up your shoots. This works well with simple enemies but can be frustrating with tougher enemies. Some move quickly, can poison you, or are simply difficult to hit. While you can only shoot in four general directions, your opponent can attack you from any angle. The game features an intriguing stamina system. Weapon use does not require stamina, thus you can use them without restriction, but it still runs out every couple of seconds. When it's all gone, weariness begins to eat away at your health bar. Although you can save game with telephone at fixed locations, this does not restore your stamina or health. While health may be healed with gauzes and med-kits, stamina requires something more valuable. That is why you must keep an eye out for water sources. One sip replenishes your whole stamina, and you may even save water in your canteen to …

It's got so few reviews, all but one are negative. I don't really see why. It's far from flawless but it's got an interesting atmosphere and, while the controls are kinda bad (action game on rpg maker) the level design so far is pretty great. So far it's got a gameboy zelda meets Aliens vibe going for it. So far I'm even getting a bit metroidvania. And showing my age a bit, it's controls are pretty in line for that era. Music is rare but it has a kind in place of it it has the whirring of machines and creepy background noise. I can recommend this under the caveat that you come in knowing the controls are going to be kinda crap.
