The King's Bird

I'm coming back to this years later realizing my review got removed. Take that as you will. I have no idea how much this game has changed with patches, but I found this back in 2019 to be an infuriating experience. The difficulty spikes for jumps you didn't really get prepared for earlier, and for some odd reason, this game decides to end with a design that does not fit it at all. On top of it, my most memorable infuriating issue with this game back in 2019 was completing the game, only getting confused with a menu and then deleting my entire save file by mistake. If it's changed at all, and it looks fun to play through all the way, it might be a nice precision platformer to vibe to. However, precision platformer with controls like these don't really mix too well.

So I got to the Fallen Kingdom section (having beaten one of apparently 3 other kingdoms?) and after quitting the game and reloading I'd found that my save was seemingly wiped? I guess that's a sign as good as any that it's time to call it there. The score is excellent with the dynamic vocals timed to your flight and the artstyle is generally quite appealing to look at however the movement system, while possessing a high skill ceiling, does not often feel satisfying or responsive enough at the level that I was playing at. I'll admit that this might just be a skill issue on my end but while there is some catharsis in finally getting past a particular stage or obstacle, the fact that the reward is just more levels to bang your head against made the experience start to wear on me.

I was surprised but good this game actually is seeing that it got only 73% positive reviews I can see some parts being annoying and mechanics being clunky but it happened rarely and only on levels where I cant fly which were least fun part of the entire game but other than that mechanics are great, I think the problem most people face is fact that you get thrown into levels without the game explaining any of the mechanics and expecting you to figure it out on your own which honestly was the fun part for me so in a nutshell if you want a game that holds your hands and teaches you every mechanic this isnt for you pretty much, you have to figure out the movement on your own in this game

King's bird is an awesome game and i think way more people should play it. If it had an explorable world and or more memorable level design this would be an instant classic, but even as it stands the mechanics for movement are so inspired and good I think people are missing out not knowing about it. in general i think the levels are well designed as speedrun challenges, which they are, but the collectibles feel more like they detract from the run rather than teach the player mechanics or hint at speedrun routing Furthermore, the level design seems a bit clunky. The levels do seem like they have intended pathing, but it doesn't feel like a level with a beginning middle and end in the way you'd expect it to. There's no clear progression to the intention or relation between the things being asked. There's always a theme, but it's hard to consider that sufficient when the theme isn't explored more (for longer, maybe? would be nice if the levels had clear relations between each other as well.) Everything feels weirdly disconnected and that's probably my biggest criticism with the game although I do want to love it (and I do like it) This game went a lot deeper into its mechanic…

Solid platformer for the price, quite fun.
