✦ AI summary

Command up to five factions in deep turn-based tactical combat across an intricately simulated solar system where billions of inhabitants rise and fall through grand strategy and diplomacy. Eight uniquely personalized alien races with distinct political systems compete for dominance, offering everything from casual play to hardcore ironman mode, with a phenomenal 54-minute soundtrack composing the backdrop to your quest to unify or conquer the galaxy.

From the creators of AI War: Fleet Command.
  • Turn-based tactical combat, with up to 5 factions competing at once.

  • New-player-friendly ramp-up of complexity as you play, which you can disable if you're already a veteran.
  • Eight races each have very distinct personalities and attributes. Each one even has its own completely unique political system.
  • Difficulty levels split between the grand strategy and turn-based combat portions of the game, both ranging from quite casual to incredibly hardcore.
  • Save and reload your game with ease any time, or tough it out in ironman mode.
  • Composer Pablo Vega's best soundtrack to date, featuring 54 minutes of music and the vocal finale "Lay Down Your Arms."

    More Details

Greetings, Hydral. I will be your computer for this "grand strategy campaign with turn-based tactical combat." I think that's code for "we're going to die."

Our solar system is vast and complicated, and I sense you are a little dimwitted -- so I tell you what, let's start with the simple stuff. Like escaping with this flagship you just hijacked from a bunch of angry robots. That seems important.

Please excuse my impertinence, but I believe you are the last of a murdered race, yes? My records note you Hydrals were the dictators of the solar system, so basically you had it coming. And by "it," I mean the moon that smacked into your homeworld. Hmm. So people really aren't going to like you until they get to know you. Well, only you can use the scattered remnants of advanced Hydral technology, so that's something.

Look, I'm not going to tell you what to do. My understanding is that you're trying to form the solar system's first-and-last unified federation, and that's noble enough. But right now nobody wants that except you, and you've got 8 very diverse, very angry races to either unify or exterminate. So... good luck with that. I'll help how I can.

Oh man, how do I rate this game...... The core of the game is unique and interesting. It may look like a 4X strategy game, but it's really more of a simulation/management game. Your own power doesn't increase that much over the game (and you shouldn't try to minmax your personally owned resources). Instead, this game is about picking who will form your Federation (which is as close as this game gets to your own personal empire), and investing in making THEM strong. This game is about them, not you. Lore-wise, your time as a grand power is over, and now you're simply pulling the strings to make the galaxy a better place for those still in it. The same 8 races feature in every game. What makes each game a unique challenge are the different starting planets for each race (which could be a huge boon or could absolutely suck), some RNG within the factions (personally the Andors affect me the most, because their government faction options are permanently locked in per game), and various massive boons and banes at the start of the game and various random events that occur throughout the game. You will need some time to learn how to analyse each race and planet and experiment with options…

Amazingly well done politics simulator with a few turn based strategy elements. Achieving the golden ending of uniting all races in one federation is very difficult and requires both specific tactics and a good dose of luck. However, this game has SOOO much more to offer, that being laser-focused on just the best ending should not be the point. There are a few events that just immediately lock you out of the best ending, but still offer a whole slew of mechanics that encourage you to keep going, to see, how you can influence the politics into your favor anyway. It is a bit disappointing though, that some of your options are not worth it, by being too expensive, achieving almost nothing of value or requiering too much time.

Developed and published by Arcen Games, The Last Federation is a strategy game that stands apart by abandoning the familiar formula of building and ruling an empire. Instead, players assume the role of Hydral, the final survivor of an ancient species whose oppressive reign led to its near extinction. With only a single flagship under their direct control, the mission is not to conquer the galaxy through overwhelming force but to guide a fractured star system toward lasting peace by establishing a federation among several competing alien civilizations. This fresh perspective transforms the game into a deeply engaging political and strategic sandbox where influence is often more valuable than military strength. Rather than placing players at the center of a conventional empire-building campaign, the game encourages them to become an unseen architect of galactic affairs. Eight distinct alien races coexist within the same star system, each governed by unique ideologies, economic priorities, diplomatic attitudes, and technological strengths. Every civilization develops independently, expanding its territory, researching new technologies, trading resources, forging alliances, and launch…

This is one of the rare strategy games where you don't try to be the biggest empire in the world. Instead, you gather and spend political power to unite bickering empires. The new player experience is exemplary. The game gradually gives you more options while not holding your hand like many bad tutorials. The flavor text on actions effectively conveys game mechanics by being funny. Very good lo-fi soundtrack. You have to play in low resolution to be able to read the text. The combat is unique but not very difficult. I think you aren't supposed to lose fights, so it is a bit superfluous. You can probably beat the game without engaging with that system. You can also do it a lot but then you'll be disappointed by how few scenarios there are. I was slightly disappointed that factions immediately stop being difficult when they join your federation. I doubt that there is much emergent gameplay, so it definitely isn't infinitely replayable. But the preprogrammed twists are relatively good. It feels pretty old-fashioned in that way.
