The Manor

The Manor is a small top down adventure game that puts me in the role of someone who has a rather unusual job. Instead of spending another normal day at the office, I am dealing with demons and investigating a dark manor. The game mixes exploration, combat and some puzzle elements into a fairly short experience, and I liked how quickly it gets me into the action without trying to make things more complicated than they need to be. The exploration is probably what I enjoyed most. The manor gives me a dark and atmospheric place to move through, with different areas to investigate and things to discover along the way. I liked checking rooms and working out where I needed to go next rather than simply being pushed from one fight to another. The top down perspective also makes it easy to keep track of the surroundings, which works well for this kind of compact adventure. Combat adds some welcome variety to the exploration. Since I am essentially working as a demon exorcist, fighting supernatural enemies is an important part of the experience. "The Manor" is an unusual amateur project where you excorcize demons using a special custom spellcasting system and plod through a attemptedly humourous linear narrative. All of which might work well if the production values were remotely contemporary, but this comes across like a 2D top down Flash game from the 1990's. This was published about 6 weeks ago on the same platform as Black Myth Wukong and Marvel Rivals. We'll go over just how amazingly successful this was a bit later. The game is really simple and unambitious in terms of implementation, more of a tech demo or one of those cases where an amateur developer spends $100 to publish something on Steam Direct to see if it's possible. Yes, obviously it's possible. A proof of concept, tech demo, or something that's less than a little blip on the radar isn't offering anything truly valuable to gamers. In terms of visuals, this features really godawful 2D MS-Paint tier "art" instead of real graphics. It's hard to say if this was because the developer didn't have the skill to do the job of creating 3D visuals, or couldn't afford to hire someone who does, but it also doesn't matter.
