when i first booted up Marco Polo, i thought it was nothing more than an ancient game. unbeknownst to me, this game CHANGED my life. as i booted it up, and its graceful music greeted my ears with a solemn symphony, i had found that not only was i a direct descendant of Marco "the goat" Polo- I was a reincarnation. Memories, flooding back to me, I had finally remembered my purpose. I knew every. single. solution. The very iconic spider chasing mini-game, is in fact lore accurate. I, Marco "awesome-sauce" Polo, did that frequently. Although, It is slightly historically inaccurate. When i was held prisoner, Five or six monkey ninjas had broken into my cell. I did in fact defeat them. Other than this? Its pretty legit. Signed, Marco "him" Polo.

Unfortunately, it delivers little more than a brief, forgettable stroll through a series of dusty rooms. For its first act, the game shows a glimmer of potential. The references to Marco Polo's famous book, Il Milione, are many, and whoever is familiar with the book would appreciate them. But as soon as you start to get invested, the game abandons its historical roots for a baffling, clichéd romantic subplot. The narrative becomes a rudderless love story that feels both out of place and painfully banal, leaving players wondering why they even bothered packing their bags. Mechanically, the game offers nothing new. It’s a standard point-and-click affair with a heavy reliance on the dreaded "object finder" trope. You’ll spend most of your time scanning static screens for barely visible items to use in overly simplistic puzzles. There’s no real challenge or cleverness to be found. A clever blending of point and click puzzler with a hidden object game. Added to the mix are interesting bits of historical trivia. The graphics are just ok since you basically move from one static image to the next. The hidden objects are small at times (pixel hunting sometimes required), but for the most part make sense. The music and voice acting are pretty generic, but I enjoyed them. The puzzles are pretty standard, but I did need the Help and Hint buttons just to learn the rules of the puzzle I was solving. I'm going to recommend this title because I got it on sale and I really like working through the older games. If you have little patience games from the 90's or early 00's you might want to skip this unpolished gem. (Yes, I know that this title was released in 2015, but it plays like an older game.)
