Never played this in the arcades but let me say this game definitely shows its age. It's an extremely difficult game- in just minutes you get bombarded by numerous enemies with fast bullets and it's very easy to get overwhelmed quickly. I understand the game only has 4 stages and they didn't want people beating the game easily (to make those quarters) but holy crap. You got a memorize every single bullet, enemy spawn to a t. The game has assists and difficulty selection but none of them seem to work. The fast heli and start ships work correctly though.

I’d rather play DaiOuJou Black Label blindfolded and with my hands tied behind my back than this.

Tiger Heli is a classic vertical-scrolling shooter that marked the debut of Toaplan as one of the defining forces in the shoot-’em-up genre. Revived and modernized by Bitwave Games and published by Clear River Games, this re-release offers a faithful recreation of the 1985 arcade original, enhanced with optional quality-of-life features designed for modern audiences. At its core, however, Tiger Heli remains a game from an era when simplicity, challenge, and reflexes defined the player experience. It’s a brief but intense journey through fast-paced action, punishing difficulty, and the unmistakable style that laid the groundwork for many shooters that followed. The premise is simple: you pilot the titular attack helicopter through a series of vertically scrolling battlefields filled with enemy tanks, artillery, and aircraft, blasting everything that crosses your path. The game operates on precision and survival rather than narrative; every second is about reacting to the constant flood of enemies and projectiles while keeping your aim steady. The control scheme is straightforward, yet the responsiveness and sense of weight behind the helicopter make every movement feel deliberate. …

✍️ A Theory of Shmup Evolution By: Joseph Salomonsen Gradius → R‑Type → Darius → Toaplan → Cave / Treasure / G.rev 🟨 Foundations — Designed Space Gradius (Konami, 1985) The origin of control: resource systems, checkpoints, and authored space. The player shapes their ship to survive the level. R‑Type (Irem, 1987) The Force system: space becomes weaponized. A slow, methodical philosophy—positioning over reflex. Darius (Taito, 1987) Branching structure and spectacle. The first step toward non-linear shmup identity. 🟥 Line 1 — Density → Pattern → Bullet Hell (Toaplan → Cave) Twin Cobra (Toaplan, 1987) The definitive military shooter. Discipline, routing, survival. (my personal fave) Truxton / Tatsujin (Toaplan, 1988) The birth of the “Mega-Bomb” aesthetic—power as expression. Batsugun (Toaplan, 1993) The bridge to Bullet Hell. Density begins to dominate space. DoDonPachi (Cave, 1997) The system is complete. Patterns become language. Mushihimesama (Cave, 2004) The organic extreme. Bullets form ecosystems, not just obstacles. Deathsmiles (Cave, 2007) A divergence: horizontal design fused with atmosphere. Bullet hell becomes mood, not just system. 🟩 Line 2 …

Very addictive and challenging!! love it!! I feel no input lag, but turn off Vsync in Nvidia CPL + max fps 60 for even less input lag. Game let you to set Fullscreen with higher refreshrate, so it's very good.

One of these games again, why many old gamers think the younger generation is just a bunch of lame kiddies. Though this version has functions like rewind and all that cheating stuff, you can play it like it was played back in '85 - the hard way: Perma death, slow movement, and so on. It would be a lie to say I would have ever been able to finish it in my youth on a real arcade, nore would I be able today - but back then you had to PAY REALLY hard to find out. With REAL Money. So you tried even harder not to suck, instead of just giving up to rather stare at your palm passively. A classic. Worth to try not to cry. Though personally I prefer "Chopper 1" (SNK 40th ANNIVERSARY COLLECTION) because it has nicer grephics ...and owes me a lot more money from back then!!! ;)
