About Twin Cobra

“FIRST STRIKE… WITH TWIN COBRA!"

Twin Cobra (known as "Kyukyoku Tiger" in Japan) reaches new heights on PC with updated extras and quality-of-life bonuses like quick saves, online leaderboards, arcade-accurate emulation, and a brand-new beginner mode. In this vertical shmup classic, you'll have your hands full with fast-flying action and deadly opponents swarming the sea, land, and skies!

You're an elite chopper jockey ready to destroy an evil superpower! Their reign of terror stretches from coast to coast. But your might and will to fight are far greater. Take aim and make their ground grunts groan, their heli-fellas faint, and sea swabs sink!

ORIGINAL GAME FEATURES:

  • Drop devastating bombs and fire four ammo types from the world’s fastest attack chopper!
  • Bypass hostile battleships and soar through enemy strongholds. Your opponents retaliate on every front using aircraft, aircraft, and tanks!
  • Fly solo or join forces with another Cobra jockey in co-op mode!
  • Survive longer to grow even stronger! Evade incoming shots to increase your fire rate and damage.
  • Original soundtrack by Masahiro Yuge and Tatsuya Uemura

QUALITY OF LIFE IMPROVEMENTS:

A well made port of Toaplan's classic vertical arcade shooter. I am particularly impressed by the inclusion of TATE mode and a nice CRT filter!

A bit easier than Flying Shark. Still brutal. But awesome.

While I'm not great at Tiger Heli, I have loved it since I was a kid. Turns out, Twin Cobra for me is more playable and easier to dodge bullets. Very satisfying game. I recommend trying it if you want an old school shooter experience.

Only buy this if you want to explore some of the genre's history or are nostalgic about it. Batsugun is in the same style a lot more fun. Personally I much prefer the Psikyo shmups. Visuals are great, music is okay. Bullets go too fast for me to thoroughly enjoy the gameplay, also the boss fights are not as epic as they should be. Gameloop becomes boring, perhaps trying a 1CC clear will fix this but I don't think the time required for such a feat would be worth it for me when there are just much better shmups available.

✍️ A Theory of Shmup Evolution By: Joseph Salomonsen Gradius → R‑Type → Darius → Toaplan → Cave / Treasure / G.rev 🟨 Foundations — Designed Space Gradius (Konami, 1985) The origin of control: resource systems, checkpoints, and authored space. The player shapes their ship to survive the level. R‑Type (Irem, 1987) The Force system: space becomes weaponized. A slow, methodical philosophy—positioning over reflex. Darius (Taito, 1987) Branching structure and spectacle. The first step toward non-linear shmup identity. 🟥 Line 1 — Density → Pattern → Bullet Hell (Toaplan → Cave) Twin Cobra (Toaplan, 1987) The definitive military shooter. Discipline, routing, survival. (my personal fave) Truxton / Tatsujin (Toaplan, 1988) The birth of the “Mega-Bomb” aesthetic—power as expression. Batsugun (Toaplan, 1993) The bridge to Bullet Hell. Density begins to dominate space. DoDonPachi (Cave, 1997) The system is complete. Patterns become language. Mushihimesama (Cave, 2004) The organic extreme. Bullets form ecosystems, not just obstacles. Deathsmiles (Cave, 2007) A divergence: horizontal design fused with atmosphere. Bullet hell becomes mood, not just system. 🟩 Line 2 …
