Towards the Unknown

I couldn't recommend it, even as free. It is a good start for a project but not fleshed out or polished so feels unfinished to the point it is not much fun yet. Definitely has potential but would need some things fixed and added to be worthwhile. Too bare-bones to recommend...

"Towards the Unknown" is one of literally thousands of student projects infesting Steam, this one from France. While student projects tend to be better quality than most "amateur" made games, we must still question what value such projects have for gamers. As with all student projects, this isn't really a fully fleshed out game, it's just the result of an academic exercise, and as such it has much more limited value as a game than a professionally developed game would have. This student project was an attempt to make a procgen "roguelike" die-and-retry turn based tactical combat RPG/dungeon crawler... fine, there's a market for those... when they're professionally and completely made, rather than half baked academic exercises that never got finished. Educational institutions should not be using Steam as a dumping ground for homework assignments (especially if the students didn't even pass the course). Sure, it helps their marketing and helps the students feel good about themselves, but this is another case of a business putting themselves before the needs of gamers. A work in progress, I hope see an archer class in the future. It was refreshing break from all the bigger more developed games out there. Simple but neat rougelite elements.

Can't recommend as-is but it's super, super close to being excellent. Immediately shows you its potential and its weaknesses. It looks like it could be a lot of fun with a little polish. Minor translation issues and quirks in the UI limit the fun, but the core experience of exploring rooms and doing turn-based combat is solid, and the tetris backpack mechanic is cool. Only took a few rooms to be clear it needs more development to reach its potential but that potential is really there.
