Maybe I'm just bad but this game is brutal. Oregon Trail on grueling difficulty has nothing on how often my parties run into terrible situations! I can only play for so long before I get frustrated and leave, but there's not much objectively wrong with the game--I've never encountered any bugs, the worldbuilding is great, and the adventures and your decisions in them feel meaningful. I have only two actual critiques: 1) I can't tell who is allowed to wield certain weapons. It feels unfair when you can't pick up any of the spears in your inventory during battle. 2) Some items could really use better tooltips. I'm still trying to figure out what some things do. Tome of Lake Creation is obvious, but it doesn't tell you just how big a lake usually is, and I didn't realize it wouldn't create navigable fjords and accidentally trapped myself. I'd love if the sight-enhancing mushroom could tell me about how long it lasts, how far it enhances vision. Now obviously this being a game of discovery, I totally get that one's first time encountering some things one should be unawares, but it'd be nice if the player could learn once they've experienced how an item works. Also, what the heck i…

The Curious Expedition may have one of the best loops I can ask for in an indie game. You start in a biome and make your way from this tile to the next looking for the "golden pyramid" that you must discover in order to proceed to the biome. Piss off the natives? You can do that. Hunt all the game? You can do that. DESTROY the biome by spreading a blood plague that spawns spiders? You can do that. Unleashing a calamity behind while you continue your search for the next big treasure? You. Can. Do. That. The combat consists of rolling dice and has a sort of gamble mechanic in play. It really does tell a great tale on each playthrough. Hell I may very well boot it up after I finish this review! Get yourself some adventure and pick this gem up. 10/10

this game is better than his successor, because of its design, its mod, its fun.

Great atmosphere, but ultimately too arbitrary.
