I played Tower Fortress as a kid almost a decade ago around release and remembered it as a fun but unforgiving vertical roguelike. But coming back to it after playing similar games, such as Downwell, Tower Fortress just feels clunky, inconsistent, and heavily luck-based. For any game, especially for an unforgiving roguelike, inconsistency makes playing it extremely frustrating, with losses almost completely out of the player's control. For starters the hitboxes feel clunky and inconsistent. Your double jump in-game is like a sonic spin jump where most enemies cannot hurt you, while you can hurt them. The problem is that if you touch a platform, or wall, you will lose the spin and become vulnerable. This should be fine, but some enemies can go through the walls or floors, making certain situations where you just barely touch a wall or floor instead of an enemy, even if it looks like the enemy is sticking out of the floor/wall. Sometimes you can shoot while spinning, sometimes you will stop spinning for the frame you shot, it feels so inconsistent... Can we safely shoot while spinning or not? Standing too close facing the outer walls makes your bullets completely not register. Thi…5 found this helpful
PROS: It's so fun that I also bought both iOS + Steam version to play forverer. CONS : It's so hard that I haven't yet finished the game xD
roguelike with a nice simple gameplay loop. me like
You can jump, drop from platforms, go left and right, and shoot, your shooting is directional and only affected based on weapon drops you can get from chests, so by default you only get a pistol with poor damage, fire rate, and range. The weapons you DO get from chests are good for the most part, but they can also completely sabotage your run, and you cannot pick up a previous weapon once you change it, so if you have an awesome weapon drop like the lightsaber that does good damage and has a good area of effect, but accidentally picked up a flamethrower with horrible range and area of effect, then you’re kind of screwed. You cannot also keep using picked up weapons endlessly, this relies on ammo and you can only get more ammo by essentially getting upgrades at the end of the stage. The upgrades are acquired by opening a gate at the end of each tower with a key, you can only get the keys by killing a specific number of enemies that increases after you get key after key, so at first you have to kill 10 enemies, then 20, so on and so forth. You do not have difficulty modes in the game to make it easier, only more difficult, there’s normal mode, and hard mode that you can pick in the…
I mean, good enough to be a pc game but is better on mobile.
