It's frankly ridiculous that this only includes the first three games' PC Engine versions, despite this coming out a year after all three Nintendo Switch compilations that include everything. No Valis IV, no option to switch between versions of the games, and 6 dollars for ROMs? I don't get it.6 found this helpful
The games in Valis: The Fantasm Soldier Collection I remember playing on the SEGA Genesis, and trying it on the NEC TurboGrafx-16. They are Anime inspired action platformers that were popular years ago. This PC collection does give you both the PC Engine, and TurboGrafx-16 versions of two games, but the "Valis: The Fantasm Soldier Collection Launcher" will only let you play the Japanese versions, with no translation for the Japanese dialog. The good news is you get the PC Engine/TurboGrafx-16 versions, which are the best versions of the Valis trilogy. The "Valis: The Fantasm Soldier Collection Launcher" options only allow integer scaling, so your game looks like a postage stamp, but they run on the MEDNAFEN emulator, so with the note book you can change that in mednafen.cfg, so the games stretch to the top, and bottom of your screen, while maintaining the games aspect ratio. There are tutorials also to run them with .bat files, which will let you play the U.S. versions of Valis 2 & 3 as well but before I go add these lines to the bottom of mednafen.cfg using notebook pce.correct_aspect 1 pce.stretch aspect pce.fullscreen 1
The games were pretty fun and great, it was nice to be able to select between the english and japanese version, and the DLCs come with a lot of content. The main downside of this version is that the launcher feels incomplete; I won't list all the downsides and reasons why it feels incomplete, as the those have been written by many people under the reviews here. But overall it's a pretty fun game and experience, though if you have the choice to buy this or the nintendo switch version, I'd recommend to buy the nintendo switch version over this one. It is pretty fun and still quite enjoyable, but I really hope they actually update this in the future since it feels incomplete. And also that they add Valis 4 and maybe Valis SD into this collection.
Never actually played THESE versions before, only played the Mega Drive/Genesis versions of Valis I and Valis III, so it's been a novel experience playing these in my free-time. I really hope they release the other Valis Collections for Steam as well, specially the ones with the Mega Drive/Genesis version of Valis I. I always thought the soundtrack had better atmosphere and placing in that game than in the PC-Engine version. But just as importantly, I want to try the other versions of Valis II, cause what little I've seen of them, they seem amazing, while the PC-Engine version of THIS Collection is...... yeeeaaah.... ¬¬' Anyway, here's to Valis and its return to the fans!
