Valkyria Chronicles™

If you told me even a couple years ago that I'd fall in love with an anime-ified spin on a WW2 tactics game, I'd ask what the hell you're smoking and then ask for a hit of it after. It sounds quite ludicrous when worded like that. And yet, here I am writing a review for Valkyria Chronicles. My god, this game is incredible. I was already a sucker for tactics games, but Valkyria implements plenty of unique designs and changes to the tactics formula that help it stand out as a crown jewel among its peers. It's easily worth the $22 CAD asking price, and then some. I haven't finished playing the game yet (doing chapter 10 right now), but I needed to get out all my thoughts on this masterpiece Where other tactic games keep you held up high in the air as an omniscient commander guiding your units' every move, VC opts to introduce a new element: letting the player take direct control of the character. Very mixed. The story & characters are great and the combat is fairly fun but everything outside of that is really boring. More than half of the game is spent in menus that take too long for no reason and the game is about 10 hours too long. 5.5 / 10

One of a kind game in the tactical game industry

I think this game holds up pretty well. It very much feels like an evolution of fire emblem, I’m sure even more so back in 2008. I would recommend playing it if you’re a fan of these kinds of games. That said, at 30 hours, it feels pretty short for turn based strategy games, but it still feels a hair too long. Maybe that’s just where I am in life. The story is probably above average, but nothing to write home about. The art style, music, and gameplay are all great, aside from the gimmick levels, which are typically pretty frustrating and where I ended up wasting most of my time. A few QoL features would go a long way. Being able to speed up/skip enemy turns and auto-progress on the dialogue in particular would make some parts of the game feel less like a slog. Otherwise, one shotting troops with a sniper never gets old.

Great Game! I originally beat this game on PS3 and loved it. Haven't played it in like 10 years and now about 2/3rds through and it's a great game. No other gameplay like it. No bugs or issues and doesn't use much system resources. Music is good and story is great. Graphics are anime style, but it was from PS3, so a little dated
