Voxel Bot

[strike]Q*Bert[/strike] Voxel Bot is another free Nannings game... oh wait, it's not free on Steam. Nannings makes this free on several websites, but Nannings are trying to scam people on Steam into paying money for something you can play for free on the web. That's right, because you're on Steam, Nannings would like to tell you to go screw yourself, you're a second class citizen here to pay them money for their scam. They also dumped this into game bundles, another way they're trying to scam people into paying money for something they already give away for free. That's not okay, I'll go so far as to say that's unethical. But this is Nannings we're talking about, and they've dumped this kind of pollution on Steam, running this scam dozens of times. Taking this seriously as a game (nobody should), it's an unabashed ripoff of Q*Bert (copyright Gottleib, 1982). It's a simple arcade game where you bounce around on various isometric cubes, avoiding baddies etc. You can play the original Q*bert for free in web browsers if you want, and it's better than this. In Voxel Bot you play as a robot that needs to clear all cubes in the level. By jumping from cube to cube you change the color of the cubes and when all the cubes are purple you cleared the level. To make your goal harder there are enemies that you can’t touch or trying to catch you. To make it even more challenging there are spikes that strike when you are too long idle on a cube. The levels will get more complex progressing the game. New mechanics will be introduced like a green cube that will let you move further and a cube that can be solid or not solid by pressing a button. In this game, the player controls a cubicle robot, who starts each game on a grid of cubes and moves by hopping diagonally from cube to cube. Landing on a cube causes it to change color, and changing every cube to purple allows the player to progress to the next stage.

While I’ve never been a big Q*Bert guy, Voxel Bot gets the isometric puzzle-platformer tropes down pretty well: avoid the bad stuff (two types of enemies, spikes) to color all the tiles comprising the level by moving over them. You get a decent assortment of obstacles (teleporters, one way and rotating tiles) and a fair selection of level design concepts (pathing and timing puzzles, light maze chase, divide and conquer). And unlike its inspiration, you can’t fall off the edges of a level: QOL upgrades and all that. So where does this little ditty fit in one's Steam diet? There’s a wide variety of good to excellent isometric “pathing” puzzles on Steam (Treasure Temples immediately comes to mind) which aren't really comparable, as Voxel Bot is not a particularly clever game. Above all else this is just a chill time—and I think there's a place for games like this in FPSers library as well as less competitive players like myself. And while I’m not going back to Q*Bert anytime soon, maybe I’ll bang my head against a wall with Solstice (NES) or Crystal Castles again this year to restore the cosmic balance of gamer rage in my household. Can't say I enjoyed Voxel Bot very much myself, but I'm sure that kids and casual players would find it very appealing. If you are going to play this game on a PC, I'd highly recommend using a mouse intead of a keyboard.

This is a new version of the classic Q*bert, but its only 60 levels and much more simplistic over all then the original. It was a great time killer. Didn't take long time to complete all the content levels. None were frustrating, they were all fun and challenging enough to have to redo a few before completion keeping it real, but short lived.
