Waking

Waking is an adventure game where the developer tries to be edgy, deep and psychological, and this is why art school dropouts should never be involved in the game industry. The idea is that you answer personal questions then the game throws that back up at you try make you feel guilty because you're in purgatory and can't leave. Whatever. This is a bad premise implemented with fantastic graphics and weak gameplay. I know most of the time I'll find that a game isn't up to a high quality standard because the visuals are poor. Here, the visuals get a pass. It's the rest of the game that's a letdown. Trying to address social issues through the medium of video games is misguided and can be harmful. While it's plausible to suggest the intention was noble, this can do more harm than good. Game developers are not professionals in areas of mental health and social problems, and when they use video games to pretend they are, this can cause far more harm than good. It's my opinion that it's improper to use video games to push political or social agendas. This game is a super interesting concept! The combat falls pretty short, with clunky controlling/targeting and some unfair trials (i was playing on the hardest difficulty mode so the latter part is subjective to me). I super wish this dev spent the time fixing things! Old game now, but I did feel like leaving a positive review would reflect my experience. There's a ton content in the game I'd like to still experience, but I think I've had my fill for now.

unfortunately i hate to say this but it is way to buggy. i was able to play for a hour but then it crashed on me, and i cant open it anymore. honestly it has a lot of potenial and i was very excited for it a long time ago, but now i can barely play this. i enjoyed my time playing it but now it wont start. I know its been 5 years but i think they gave up on this game.

I expected a walking simulator but it was something else. I liked how I could analyse my life a little. But then it was just not fun to find my way around.

It is impossible for me to accurately describe the experience of trying to play this game without violating my own prohibitions against the bullying of game developers, so I will instead say that the "chad Waking enjoyer" will probably not be someone who is looking for dark, metaphysical takes on philosophy and death, and more looking for a casual weekend spent sampling other developer's game jam offerings.
