Waking Mars

[h2]When is waking up a planet a good idea?[/h2] Waking Mars was actually an interesting indie. It's a fun little action platformer where you fly around with a jetpack and shoot aliens. The level design is pretty good, but some of the character art during the dialogue... I don't mean to be mean, but looking back at it now it reminds me of weird AI art, even though AI art wasn't really a thing when this game came out. The story, however, didn't stick with me one bit. Does it even have one? Take that with a grain of salt, as some psychopaths like to say. I don't really want to replay it to find out. I'm pretty much like that with all games anyways. Lovely mash up of visual novel, metroidvania, puzzle and farming sim. Story was enjoyable, going hand in hand with the exploration. Great cast and voice acting.

On paper there's a lot to like about Waking Mars, but it never really felt like it was able to transfer out of "early 2010's iPad game" for me. Going from room to room doing similar tasks didn't grab me, and the stiff and unnatural protagonist kept the story ever feeling engaging. Maybe 10 years ago I would have been able to appreciate Waking Mars for what it is, but for now, it was too much of a relic for me.

I played this a long time ago. Fantastic game. No combat, the game is about exploration and creating life.
