About Witchkin

Selected for PAX Rising at PAX South 2018 and "Best Let's Play!" category at DreamHack Austin 2018!

"You are being stalked by evil dolls in an old black-and-white film..."

Witchkin is a first-person 'hide-and-sneak' survival horror game in the vein of Slender or Five Nights at Freddie's.

The player takes the role of a child attempting to find his abducted little sister in an abandoned Texas farmhouse in the 1920s. This house is home to the Witchkin--a family of terrifying toys, the children of a deranged woman known as the Candy Lady. Using her “children” she will do everything in her power to keep all who enter the house from ever leaving.

The base play mechanics of Witchkin are primarily stealth. Sneaking, hiding, staying quiet and aware of the toys and your surroundings are skills required throughout the game. Witchkin boasts a very strong and unique art style reminiscent of early silent movies, painted in the eerie sepia tones of postmortem photos and the murky shadows of nightmares.

Witchkin is a one-man show, only one person created the game: art, music, voice (with a little help from family members), and programming.

✦ AI summary

Players report significant technical issues with the game, including frequent crashes that prevent gameplay and unwanted SteamVR activation despite it not being a VR title. Those who can play criticize the limited mechanics, particularly an underexplained hiding system that doesn't function as intended and lighting that's too dark to navigate without attracting enemies, though some appreciate the atmosphere and find it a decent experience with room for polish.

Not for me. Pretty basic and pretty boring. I was waiting for thrills or jump scares but they never came

Framerate locked at 30. Resolution locked at 1080p. The game opens SteamVR, even though it's not a VR game.

Its decent, a few areas that could use some polish in its design. For one hiding is kind of useless since holding your breath is required to actually hide successfully and you can't really do that longer than the creature stays in the room, and if there was a way to hold said breath longer why wouldn't the game tell you that? Lighting is another nitpick i had, albeit the game's atmosphere is perfect it just kind of feels bizarre having to navigate through levels that are much to dark to see without a light, yet turning said light on means the enemies will sure as hell see you as they patrol through the very limited pathways you can take to traverse around. TLDR hiding is a bit of a useless mechanic and visibility although realistic kind of takes away from the momentum in a game sense
