The Longest Journey

Note: I had to set the version to the "beta" branch and then had no issues playing on a modern PC with Windows 11. I decided one day to just play through The Longest Journey in its entirety and record it for Youtube. And it was one of the most fun adventure / point-and-click games I've ever played! You have a likeable protagonist in a unique setting consisting of a futuristic/sci-fi world that finds a way to travel between it and a more medieval/fantasy world. Completing the story requires spending time in both worlds, meeting different characters, learning about the lore of the world, and finding items and solving puzzles. The game is not particularly difficult, at most there was a few moments where you have to be quick to react to something. I found I had to look up a walkthrough a few times to help me ensure I was headed the right direction, but I would always have one nearby for games like these to make sure I'm not stuck. I was pleasantly surprised with graphics, voice acting, music, and the simple controls. I'd heard a lot about this game, so I tried it years ago, but for some reason, I stopped playing and only returned to it a few days ago. This is a different and unique game. The worlds the main character travels to, the events that unfold, and the clever storyline that allows the player to progress in a captivating way all contributed to my enjoyment. Its puzzles are also intelligent and not overly complex, unlike what's typical for this genre. This doesn't mean the game is easy enough to be boring. There's much to say about the game's distinctive features, but what truly sets it apart and makes it an unforgettable experience is its amazingly rich and beautifully written story, with deep references to the renowned epics like the Odyssey and Gilgamesh. The game's design is very distinctive, and I think it was captivating for players when it was released. These days, games like this don't get the recognition they deserve, but the truth is, this game is phenomenal and visually stunning. I played this game once... Long, long time ago. It became one of my favorites then and it still is in my top 5 games. I remember it was criticized for too much talking, too much to read. Don't people read books? There are no animations in a book, but a lot of words 😒 But a lot of words are needed to tell a good (detailed) story and create a whole new world

I really enjoyed my time with the game, I got through it in couple sittings over a week or two, it was a nice compact experience. I did start playing with a guide almost immediately because of how obtuse the puzzles were, but it's fun to wander around in the world and try to figure out stuff for yourself now and again. The backgrounds are beautiful and cool and breathe a lot of life into the unique settings alongside the story. There's a real timeless quality to the plot and characters, you could believe the game only came out a couple years ago from a team that just liked old-school aesthetics. I would highly recommend.
