✦ AI summary

Players praise Appointment with FEAR for its unique visual novel presentation of the Fighting Fantasy gamebook, with an engaging superhero comic book theme and the ability to create your own hero. However, some find the experience lacking in replay value and meaningful choices, with limited content that makes it feel more like a one-time playthrough rather than a game worth purchasing at full price.

Appointment with FEAR is an interesting adaptation of the Fighting Fantasy series book because, unlike most video game adaptations of the series, which stay more faithful to the books, this one feels more like a choice-based visual novel. It still follows the book at its core; it’s just the presentation that is different, with a comic book style and simplified stats and combat, where dice rolls are hidden from the player. But here it makes sense for two reasons: the story has a comic superhero theme, so this style feels right at home, and instead of navigating through a map, events unfold naturally over time. As a bonus, you even get to create your own superhero. The story is pretty enjoyable, with plenty of supervillains and references to the main comics. And while there’s no map, you’ll have to choose where to go, which locks you out of the other options, so you still have multiple paths, just in chronological order. A successful playthrough is a bit shorter than the other books, but there’s more replay value because, at the start, you have to pick one of four different superpowers, which unlock different choices and affect the ending requirements. And it’s pretty tough—it’ll r…
The one where YOU are a Superhero
On the whole, I'm a newcomer to gamebooks. Odds are by the time I became acquainted with popular culture, the golden age of gamebooks had passed. I got properly acquainted with them first via the mobile version of Fighting Fantasy Classics. And this just so happens to be the first of said gamebooks I ever completed. The setting is possibly the most shameless parody of Silver Age superhero comics ever imagined. The player takes on the role of a superhero who learns about a meeting of a group of supervillains who predictably want to take over the world. The meeting will take place after a couple of days and it's up to the resident superhero to discover the location of the meeting and stop the villains before it's too late.
Two versions
I'm not certain, but Appointment with FEAR might be the only Fighting Fantasy gamebook that has two clearly distinct versions. Here's a rough comparison: The Classic version (DLC for Fighting Fantasy Classics -collection) - The stats of the player character are randomly determined by dice rolls. - The combat outcomes are likewise determined by dic…
