Heroes of Tomorrow: Hidden Potential

I suspect the use of generative AI with this game, as even with my short playtime, the game didn't seem to track what was going on - something is off about both the coding and writing in a way I have not seen before. I would not recommend this game.

I've given this two solid, careful playthroughs, and I've concluded that this is worth a recommend, but I believe it really depends on what you're looking for. This is not a particularly difficult game (which I am thankful for, after a few other recent CoG titles) so don't come here looking for that. The story is a mixed bag -- it doesn't cover new ground, it never really feels paced in such a way that tension ramps up, and neither does it have a particularly satisfying conclusion, so don't come here for a unique superhero arc, either. This is instead, very much a character driven game. If you like that idea, and aren't against a run-of-the-mill and not fully realised superhero setting, you may well enjoy it. Difficulty and skill checks The skil checks are plentiful but not outrageous. The only thing I really criticise here is that the "personality" skill checks feel unnecessary and limit role-playing. Talents I can understand, whether I am a fighter or not, but having to check every different style of response is a bit tiring and sometimes grating. Being a fan of the Choose Your Own Adventure books from back in the day as well as superheroes, this was right up my alley. If you like any of those (or hopefully both!), then you will enjoy this. One of the things I appreciated the most about the game is the amount of world-building in here, and it takes the show-but-don't-tell approach- you get hints of the past without it getting info-dumped on you. You're going to be faced with some hard choices, and you absolutely will be second-guessing some of them, but that's what multiple playthroughs are for, right?

After getting through my first playthrough, I thought it was alright. I liked the varied cast of characters and the detailed subsections of the stats page, but I disliked how virtually everything your character says changes the personality values - especially Composed/Reckless. And sometimes it feels like you're guaranteed to fail, because the choice might test three of your weak stats. I went with a Athletics/Fighting/Superhuman Physiology build and ended up defeating both Brilliant and the Dark Star and romancing Conjuruer in my playthrough. Nobody died and I got all 3 hero awards.

Lots of neat ideas and interesting story elements but to put it bluntly, this is one of the worst written choice of games story I've ever read. There are parts that so plainly explain things that I can't even call it prose. Each time something like this pops up it took me out of the story, to the point that I assume there was no editor on this to give notes.
