About YIIK: A Postmodern RPG

✦ AI summary

YIIK I.V is a surreal adventure where you navigate the blurred lines between reality and dreams, solving puzzles and battling bizarre entities with turn-based combat that punishes every mistake through an escalating bleeding system. Its haunting narrative weaves between two protagonists uncovering impossible truths across shifting realities, backed by an eclectic 200-track soundtrack performed by live musicians.

An unusual error manifests on April 4th, a day that echoes the enigmatic code 404. In a desperate act of innocence, a child relinquishes her name for an invitation to a birthday party, her hope tethered to the faint possibility of finding her brother. Meanwhile, Alex, a recent college graduate, returns home, only to find his reality unspooling like a threadbare tapestry. Guided by a cat which slips through the very fabric of his mind, Alex descends into the depths of his consciousness where he witnesses the impossible: a woman, locked away in an iron maiden, vanishing into thin air. A vision which ignites an undying obsession and threatens to unravel the boundaries of his world.
  • Combat in YIIK I.V is an arcane dance, a turn-based system where players use everyday weapons against bizarre entities, aided by the power of Karta. When players or enemies take damage, they start to bleed, and every action taken while bleeding brings them closer to defeat. It’s a race against time to outlast the enemy and stem the flow of blood.
  • Navigate landscapes that blur the line between reality and dreams. These spaces are filled with intricate puzzles, deadly traps, and odd adversaries that challenge your perception, pushing the boundaries of what you know to be real.
  • The narrative shifts between the perspectives of Alex and the Nameless Child, drawing you into their separate yet intertwined realities, each twist revealing deeper layers of their destinies.
  • The game’s soundtrack features over 200 tracks across a wide range of genres, from drum and bass to progressive rock. Much of the music is performed by live musicians, adding a vibrant and authentic layer to the experience.

playing this game with a pure heart and no preconceived bias against it from negative reviews is highly recommended. amazing battle system overhaul, as someone who never played the old one but is playing it in NG++. jesus christ it sure was something. god praise be the dark game. 60+ hours on this game and i still haven't seen everything it has. somehow one of the most psychologically mind numbing yet beautiful stories ive ever experienced. unpopular opinion, but despite how insufferable he is alex is one of my favorite indie rpg protagonists ive played as. hes so interestingly horrible, but i think I.V definitely helped to cement the fact that he wasn't just born that way, to say it in a non spoilery way. please play this. please please please play this game. play the NG+ as well. also, buy/read deviation perspective. please

This game will stick in your brain no matter what you think about it, I beat it this January and I'm still trying to think about how I feel about this game. With that being said I had a great time when I was playing the game.

YIIK IV is an underrated gem with some things left to be desired. Alex Eggleston is a 25 y/o returning home from college, and right out the gate you can tell he's a flawed character. Without spoiling much, he's an unemployed self centered man-child that lives with his mom. The story is told from his perspective, traversing the town he grew up in and the neighboring towns, gathering a party together to find a missing girl. All of the characters speak with a similar verboseness to Alex, which makes sense given the fact that he is the narrator. A lot of the story is left up to interpretation, and I think it's worth browsing the fandom to see what the general theories are. As far as gameplay goes, YIIK is a fairly standard RPG. There's some minor puzzle solving and visual novel elements, (Most of which is fully voice acted!) and plenty of explorable space and battles to grind. My only complaint around the gameplay is that the combat tutorial is extremely confusing. For whatever reason, the tutorial explains everything in the most convoluted manner possible. Despite this, it's easy to get a grasp on. There's several elements to the combat system that make battles a bit overwhelming at…

its sureal, it has a good turn baced combat system, it has a facinating anti-rolemodle type mane character playing the role of narrorator, it tells a reletively symple story in an absract way expecting you to follow simbolism and figure out whats going on yourself. its niche its weird and i like that about it
