Rebel Galaxy Outlaw

Should of stuck to the first games combat mechanics and expanded/improved them instead of switching from controlling battleships and cruisers to exclusively fighter class ships and dog fights. Ship selection is abysmal with almost half the amount of ships to choose from and upgrade as the first game. All in all a major disappointment as someone who very much enjoyed the first title.

I really, really want to like this game, and I've given it 33 hours to start being fun. It has frequent *glimmers* of fun, but then something crops up that extinguishes that glimmer. If I could give a recommendation of "Meh", I would. The root gameplay loop is "go have a space dogfight, earn money, improve your ship, get into tougher dogfights". The core gameplay is a lot of fun if you have fond memories of PRIVATEER like I do, but the main problem is the difficulty curve. Once you get past the first hour of gameplay or so, your missions are either trivial or impossible. The times where I got into a rough patch but ended up winning were very rare: I was fine or I was dead. That's what killed the game for me. Beyond that, there's just lots of little quirks and annoyances that drag things down. There's glimmers of a "space trader" game play, where you can buy low, go somewhere else, and sell high, but your meager cargo capacity coupled with a profound lack of variety in the starting system makes that pointless. If you are looking for a remake of Wing Commander Privateer, then stop looking and go play this title, it has all the features of the classic game plus a lot of extras all with modern grafics. I like the smooth controls with mouse/keyboard and the very functional and immersive UI, all the menus don't misplace the in-game action but are beautifully designed. Positives: - Nice graphics, immersive - Excellent ship combat mechanics, yet simple; good enemy ship AI. - Innovative flight controls with mouse/keyboard: Optional flight assist, aim-assist - Good UI and menu design, not obstructive, fitting the game action Negatives: - Mediocre game save system that causes problems - Cargo hold of the ships is too small to enjoy the non-combat part of the game The positives prevail, at least for me, and you can solve the 2nd negative with mods. id been looking for a game like this since getting back into space sims, the story is decent & the combat has a nice learning curve to it, I like the fact you have to be careful in your crappy little space ship but can earn money & upgrade it along the way & progress as you please, not bad at all I have one minor gripe, no analogue throttle option when using a gamepad despite it being an option for when you use a HOTAS oh yeah i forgot, the music is bloody awesome

All of my recent saves are gone, only a save from 4 years ago exists. Loved the game, but that is the last time I will ever play it. Obviously I cannot recommend a game that deletes saves.

I enjoy this game a lot, and have at times lost days to it. I do feel like the developers deserve a special place in hell for refusing to add deadzone settings for controllers, and overriding the Steam deadzones. playing with mouse and keyboard isn't the same experience as with a controller, and in my financial situation God knows when I'll be able to buy a new controller. So this game will unfortunately be sitting uninstalled in my library for quite some time ahead
