AGON - The Mysterious Codex (Trilogy)

Wow, just wow. This is a Myst style game with very good production values for the time Good voice acting and animations,. The story is okay but OMGosh it is one of the most tedious frustrating games I have played! It has 360 degree movement and it's incredibly easy to miss clues , there's lots of reading that has no relevance to the solution. I just started trying to follow a walkthrough and even THAT was frustrating as it was so easy to miss things. This is only for the most patient adventure gamer. To bad because the production values are so good.

An exciting adventure which continues from the frozen lands of Lapland up to hot-tropical land of Madagascar. Solve the ancient secret of AGON, collect the mysterious elder board games and have fun!

We just finished all 4 available chapters of Agon: The Mysterious Codex. The first three chapters were released as a unit back in 2006, while Chapter 4 came out in 2008. Chapter 1--London: This takes place late on a rainy night in the offices and storage rooms of the British Museum. It is the early 1900s. The game features 360 degree motion, and the graphics are actually pretty decent. We played the game on Steam. Players must use books, maps, telephone, typewriter and make a guard fall asleep. Though short, this was a good opening segment and teaches the player how to move and handle objects. There is an inventory and it will grow quite large by the end. Chapter 2--Lapland: This chapter takes place in an arctic winter environment. I recommend playing it in the summer! We first arrive at a very small and very lonely railroad station in the middle of nowhere. The stationmaster is passed out drunk in bed. We must get the stove going and solve some major puzzles, a few of which are impossible without walkthru help. The puzzles tend to become quite nasty very quickly. Solving a Morse Code puzzle (make no spelling mistakes!) playing an organ to call a reindeer tax…

Unfortunately, this game wasn't quite for me, though I can see it might appeal to others with more patience for its particular style. I struggled with the movement system—while the game appears to be fully 3D, navigation is actually click-based, advancing meter by meter. This made exploring the world feel slow and cumbersome, especially in the early sections where you need to travel between rooms and down to the cellar multiple times. I spent a fair amount of time just clicking my way back and forth along corridors, which took away from the sense of discovery. I also found the lack of in-game hints made it difficult to stay engaged—I often found myself wandering without a clear sense of direction. I eventually stopped during the winter area, as the movement demands became too frustrating for me to continue. That said, I respect the work that went into creating this world, and I know some players may not mind these mechanics as much as I did. Just wanted to share my honest experience.

[Neutral]This is a mixed bag. Pros: 1. Decent story 2. Voiced 3. Interesting historical games instead of generic minigames 4. Generally OK puzzles, not too hard, but usually not trivial either. 5. A lot of lore. Cons: 1. My main complaint are the controls. It tries to follow the movement schematic present in for example Myst series, but simply has too many movement points often one too close to another. This leads to a situation where you can't interact with some object just by you, cause it's not part of the "current" scene. It' becomes active once you move a step in some random direction. And random is the keyword here, cause often to approach a specific object you need to do it form a specific side. Example: Standing by a desk you can't just move to the other side, you need to circle it from specific side, as often the second path is designed as an approach to some other object and simply lacks the option to move behind the desk Another example you can't check the trash bin by a desk while standing to the side of the desk where it is located, you need to sit behind the desk to do so.
