About A Trip to Yugoslavia: Director's Cut

A TRIP TO YUGOSLAVIA is an experimental interactive game with a theme of the old VCR player (with the ability to REWIND, PAUSE and FASTFORWARD).

Yugoslavia has fallen apart. No one knows what caused it. Some people ran away instantly and some of them still don't know that the war has just begun
Including you. You're taking a role of Dimitri, an amateur photographer, who has been caught in the nearby Yugoslavian forest on the outskirts of town. Now, without any combat knowledge, you have to survive a few months of war in a desolated country.

Welcome on a one way trip...

Game features:

  • Full Motion Video
Thanks to FMV you can get immersed even more into your one way trip.
  • Point & Click sections
Explore the environment, collect items, hide the bodies…
  • QuickTime events
Press the arrow in the right direction to get out in one piece. Otherwise, you might die or change the outcome of the entire story.
  • Choose your own path
Your decisions throughout the whole game can lead you to one of the ten available endings.
  • VCR system
Rewind, Pause and FASTFORWARD the tape you’re watching.

STEAM version exclusive content:

  • 12 minutes of additional gameplay
  • Three new endings
  • Four new achievements
  • Mac & Linux ports
  • Steam achievements and trading cards

This game isn't based on any real Yugoslavian conflict

WARNING: Linux and Mac versions are experimental. Buy at your own risk.

Feels like finding a strange old VHS tape and somehow becoming part of it. Weird acting, rough presentation, but a genuinely unique idea that makes the whole experience strangely memorable.

2/10 Based on the age of all the actors and the overall quality of the game, I'm assuming this was some sort of student project, or at the very least was made by high school students. That adds a layer of charm to it, though the game overall is very poorly constructed. Things are poorly conveyed, the quick-time events are horribly implemented and, while I understand it is inherently hard to make an FMV game, this feels like a poor execution of it. Still, very charming, and shows some potential for better projects in the future. It is my understanding that this game is about a decade old, so I'd be curious to play some of their newer stuff.

I just want to start the review off by saying. Yes I do understand this was a game designed to be a fun game the creator could make with his friends. Yes I understand the game is supposed to have absurdly funny choices to make sometimes. This game was not fun to play at all for me. The language setting at the very start of the game did nothing and the menus were still in a language I couldn't even understand even after a full restart. The QTE's are the worst I've ever seen for a FMV, The choices themselves which I will give credit did feel like they had an impact were just so confusing especially the way it was all laid out. Also while I love the idea of the game being a VHS you can pause, skip forward, and replay I feel like the design was perfect but the way it feels to use is awful. I will give this game even more credit though. Congrats on getting through the Steam Greenlight because I know that must have been really really hard.
