About Spacebase Startopia

"Help, we're all going to d... Wha... Oh, excuse me, it seems my system is no longer up-to-date – \ – so, much better… WELCOME to the Spacebase Startopia! I'm VAL, your helpful and efficient Space Station AI!

According to my records, this Station hasn’t been used at all in the last 17 years! How very strange. Furthermore, it would appear that you are the only rational life form in this Sector. Well then, CONGRATULATIONS! I hereby officially pronounce you Commander of this Space Station! Hopefully you will enjoy more success than your predecessor who, according to the logbook, er… ran into some wormlike Aliens… Oh, nothing to worry about!

To keep the same thing from happening to you, there's a lot you're going to have to do. Amongst others, there’s the development of further Sectors, maintenance of the three vital Main Decks as well as the customer acquisition and entertainment of our extraterrestrial visitors, who provide us with sufficient Energy for our plans for global improvement. Oh, and before I forget – it's probably just a bug in my security protocols anyway – but my sensors are showing just loads of enemy creatures in all of the other Sectors…

So, what are we waiting for? Let's get to work! Let us join forces to conquer space."

Spacebase Startopia captivates with its original mixture of economic simulation and empire building strategy paired with classic RTS skirmishes and a good dose of humor. In addition to the challenging single player Campaign and the versatile battle mode, there are also competitive and cooperative multiplayer modes for up to four players. And as if maintaining the three Space Station Decks, entertaining the eight Alien races and defending against enemy invaders were not enough of a challenge, the dynamic narrator AI is not going to mince matters and commentates the events in a lovely but sharp-tongued manner.

Spacebase Startopia is a colourful sci-fi management game and a spiritual successor/remake of the cult classic Startopia. It combines space-station construction, economic management, alien population control and light RTS combat across three interconnected decks. The Extended Edition adds cosmetic extras and the soundtrack, but does not fundamentally change the core game. The three-deck structure is probably the game's strongest design idea. It gives the station a genuine sense of verticality and forces you to think about logistics and priorities rather than simply filling a flat map with buildings. There is also a reasonable mixture of economy, construction, research, staff management, trading and combat. Pirates and rival factions can interfere with your operation, while mech units provide a basic RTS component. Unfortunately, combat is considerably less sophisticated than the management side. Visually, Spacebase Startopia is colourful and busy. Watching aliens wandering around, droids transporting supplies and visitors enjoying the entertainment facilities gives the station plenty of personality. The problem is the humour. VAL, the …

I read the mixed reviews, but when this went on discount sale and knowing my love or Startopia, I had to try it. Yes, the AI is a bit off, it is no original VAL, but you can change the voices which is nice, but none of them are amazing. Some of the levels are quite difficult. I am still unable to make it past the thunder dome level. Maybe it is just me, but overall, a good game. CONS 1. New Aliens! Why?! I was hoping for updates to the species I already knew. 2. The AI is no VAL, I miss the old Val. 3. Some of the Bio Deck Harvests are Automatic. While nice, I guess, it distracts the Scuzzers and then nothing else gets done. I do not open more than 3 biodeck sections or it is just too much. Pros 1. The research and upgrades. You do not necessarily need a research room to do this, nice touch. 2. The new store. No more Arona Daal. However, a regularly changing limited store is available until you build a startport and factory. 3. Easier to locate bombs and sabotage, It was so difficult to find the bombs on the old game. Overall I enjoy this game, but could have been 10X Better if it was done correctly.
