If you’re here on a historical tour of this ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ of mismanagement, I would highly recommend the game “Space Haven”, which is feature-complete, well-executed, and supported by developers who care more about their customers than their own ego. It’s what this game could’ve been. I think my experience with this game was like many. Encouraged by some excellent Early Access titles at the time, when Spacebase DF-9 hit early access, I naively assumed that I was buying something that would be worked on for years. Double Fine had published an exciting development plan. However, just a few months later, development was abruptly stopped, and the still very minimal, bug-riddled game was released as 1.0, with future plans quietly and unceremoniously removed. In the fallout, Double Fine made statements claiming that they broke no promises and they simply weren’t making enough money on the game - which, honestly, never reached a state where it was functional enough to be worth buying. My Steam Early Access purchase, like everybody who bought the game, was seen by Double Fine as a donation. Note, at the time of abandonment, if I remember correctly, Steam Refunds were not a thing.
