Rail of Möbius

Once in a while, i like getting some barely known VN in search of some new perspectives and spins on various stories, themes and genres, they don't even have to be great once-in-a-decade masterpieces. However, while it is a spike pit of my own making picking up a time travel sci-fi mystery novel in my searches, i have stumbled upon a true "mid". Frankly, even "mid" might be too spicy of a description for Rail of Mörbius. Despite being a very strong derogatory word towards an artistic work, arguably even worse than calling something "bad" or "awful", there are still some interesting ideas in such creations, they're just usually not realized to their full potential. It's not necessarily untrue that there's nothing that caught my interest, but i'm not sure that just ONE somewhat side thing can fix the overall blandness of the rest of the novel. That, of course, being the relationship between Ren and Cecilia. "Finally, a somewhat interesting take on a relationship between childhood friends, neither of who are desperately eager to shag another", i thought naively (albeit, the latter part holds true, credit where credit's due). Great VN with virtually no filler make for a gripping a tightly bound story. The characters are only a small level up from being complete tropes but the focus is on their involvement in the time travel elements as well as the romance plots, so it is hardly an issue. Music, sound and visuals are also acceptable, but not the highlight. The story is obviously deeply reminiscent of Stein's Gate as many will point out but doesn't meander as much and the time travel system in Rail of Mobius is unique enough. The romance in this story is very touching and really brings emotional depth to the time travel plot as well as being very heartwarming in its own right. Definitely recommended for VN enjoyers.

Played this on my channel recently (link at end of review for anyone wanting to see a sample before buying) but didn't leave a review at the time. Overall, I'd say I enjoyed Rail of Mobius and would recommend it if you're a fan of VNs. The art style is pretty, the characters are likeable enough and the premise is interesting, being set on an undersea train... that also happens to be a time machine. There are three endings for you to find, and it shouldn't take too long to get them - maybe somewhere in the region of 13-15 hours, if my own play time is anything to go by. If I had one minor criticism, it's that there is a bit of repetition in the game. This is kind of understandable given that time travel is a big part of the story, with the characters finding themselves dealing with time loops and repeating events, so I'm not going to hold it against the game overall. Maybe just a few bits of dialogue here and there could be trimmed, but it's no biggie. It's a good read once you can put the absurdity of the game's mechanics of time travel aside and roll with it. One thing to note is that you have to reach multiple bad endings first before you can proceed. This is not immediately clear - you need to start up a new game when the cover image changes, which will partially restart the story from other characters' perspectives (adding new black cars to the train, which is plot relevant to the true ending). The best true ending (ending 0) also can only be accessed by loading up a save with the final choices after you have seen the first 2 endings, both of which have plot relevant information on how the characters can reach the true ending. This is also not immediately clear. Overall an enjoyable read.

Interesting story, likable unique characters with incredible soundtrack. Also it has great humor, pretty short story so not much useless moments.
