Lost At Sea

For what it was, I enjoyed it. It's a little unpolished, but it was obviously made with a lot of heart, and with a game like this, the primary goal is to get the FEEL of it right - the vibes, the music, the tone - and the feel of it was very good. My only real complaint is that in many places I felt I needed more guidance; there is one puzzle I'm still not sure how I solved. That and it taking almost the entire game to figure out how to escape the fear thing when it cropped up except hope I made it to a safe area in time (looking at it is not enough, you have to keep looking at it while running away so that it can't touch you before it's dismissed). That said, the fear thing was really effective at illustrating how grief can blindside you, I felt tense whenever it got close, and I really empathized with the main character, even if I wish some of the circumstances of what happened to Danny had been made a bit more clear. The juggling "minigame" reminded me of my own mom, who raised two kids and worked a job all by herself. It all feels very true to life. If you like walking sims with light puzzle and speed based challenges, this is for you, especially if you're not easily frustrate…

It's a little more complex than your average walking sim type game, but it still has some problems that mess up the experience, mostly with the narrative. The story is kind of like games such as "What Remains of Edith Finch" and "Gone Home" in that you're supposed to piece together the story from what is being presented. The concept is artistic and the presentation is great, as you are basically wandering an island and collecting objects that represent memories. Each time you find an object, a little mini game starts. It's super simple and feels half baked, but at least the game has some puzzle element. Sometimes you'll need to climb up a structure and other times you do something like touch stars to form a constellation. The only thing that can make it challenging is the fact that there's no explanation and you have to just sort of figure it out. You get a compass that tells you where to go next, but you still have to hunt down the objects in each area and this can be confusing. I was super excited for Lost At Sea because the concept genuinely seemed interesting and emotional, but the execution completely ruined the experience for me. I usually enjoy walking simulators because they’re meant to feel relaxing and immersive, but this game somehow made the experience stressful in the worst way possible. The shadowy creature mechanic was awful and completely killed the atmosphere for me. Instead of exploring and enjoying the story, I felt constantly irritated and pressured. What makes it worse is that the AI behavior of the creature felt frustrating rather than challenging, and I couldn’t even progress far enough to see if the story became worthwhile. I wanted to like this game so badly, but the gameplay design completely pushed me away.

The budget for this game went mostly towards its assets and lighting effects and it shows.

Lost At Sea is a good exploration game set on a tropical and mysterious island, featuring mini-games and, above all, a very beautiful narrative about the moving story of Anna as she goes through different stages of her life. I had one problem with this game: it can sometimes be buggy. My rating is 7/10.
