Lucy Dreaming

I'm 47 years old. I played Monkey Island when it was first released in the early 1990s - and was a huge fan of all the sequels. This game - Lucy Dreaming - was made for me. It's a point-and-click adventure, VERY strongly influenced by Monkey Island, with numerous references to the classic game. If you like MI, you'll love Lucy Dreaming :)

There's been a lot of discourse in the adventure game community the last couple of years about how modern point and clicks have become too streamlined: too few and easy puzzles, with an over-reliance on story over gameplay. Therefore it's interesting playing Lucy Dreaming, a modern P&C that is streamlined in a lot of ways, but keeps itself [i]unashamedly[/i] in the old school, for better and worse... First of all, the game looks and sounds great: the early LucasArts influence is palpable, with chunky, Maniac Mansion-esque pixel art, memorable tunes and an impressive voice cast. The comedy writing is surprisingly good as well, with some genuinely funny moments, even though it does commit to the "let's reference every single other classic adventure game all the time"-style of writing that I personally am very tired of by now. Nostalgic references are not a replacement for good writing. You [i]are[/i] allowed to write a comedy adventure game without mentioning Guybrush Threepwood at every turn. A fun game with great humour, a few tricky puzzles but nothing to spoil the experience, great nostalgic references to Monkey Island with voice acting from Guybrush himself!

Really loved this game. If you like the old Lucasarts games, Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle etc. it's safe to say you'll enjoy this. Their influence is clear. It's a nice level of difficulty in my opinion, managed to complete it without hints, Challenging at times without ever becoming frustrating, often the game nudges you in the right direction. That said I only got 3 achievements, so there's obviously more to it that I never spotted.

One of my favourite point and click adventures I've played. Does a perfect job of tipping the hat to the absurdity of the old point and click games from the Sierra era, without the tearing your hair out plot stopping experience of actually playing a Sierra game. Storyline is original and weird and perfect. 100/10.

Very fun game. Coming back to adventure games after like 40 years (I'm 55 now). So maybe I'm not great at modern adventure games but this actually had quite a bit I could solve on my own (definitely not all!) so I am not just following a walkthrough all the way to get to the story. Hope these folks will be making more games!
