About Crude Oil

✦ AI summary

Crude Oil is a physics-based platformer where you play as a blob of oil bouncing, splatting, and growing your way through an industrial world to escape the oil industry. Subvert classic platforming with formless elasticity, time manipulation, and creative obstacle-stacking while hunting hidden collectibles in this atmospheric 4-hour adventure.

This is a fairly short adventure that you can play in around 4 hours. It's atmospheric and a little bit funny. You are a blob of oil and you have to escape from the oil industry.

Bounce Around

Splat off the walls, bowl thru stacks of barrels, and skate across puddles as an elastic blob, with Mario-like moves subverted by formlessness. Slow time to pull a tricky maneuver, or just to savor your character’s outlandish acrobatics.

Get Huge

Collect and launch oil droplets to grow into a formidable glob or shrink to a modest slick. Try on different hats for a variety of short-term power-ups.

Escape

Drive a forklift to lift and stack heavy obstacles to suit your oily needs. Mix it up with rude robots.

ALSO:

  • OST by Body Meat!
  • Toggle-able CRT and 4:3 display modes!
  • Explore and collect hidden pinecones in a seamless open world

✦ AI summary

Crude Oil has beautiful art, creative design, and clever puzzle-platforming mechanics that many players find charming and atmospheric, but it is severely hampered by frustrating camera controls and movement mechanics that make basic navigation feel cumbersome and prevent players from seeing their surroundings effectively. Multiple players also report significant bugs including falling through floors, broken shooting mechanics, and progression-blocking issues that suggest the game needs substantial technical refinement.

I do not think this game is ready. In my short time playing, I encountered a bug where every time you loaded, you fell through the floor. You had to dash in order to hit the ground before falling through the floor. This also led to a bug where I was spawned before the elevator sequence. When going through the elevator, it did not spawn for a second time and I fell through the floor and I could not progress. I encountered a third bug where the "shooting" mechanic stopped working and would not apply to buttons. After the third pretty big bug before 1 hour of playing, I decided to refund the game.

This could be a fun game, however the camera controls are what keeps it from being entertaining. You are given just enough control over the camera to become frustrated at the fact that you can't face it so that you can see what's in front of you. An most of the time you need a birds eye view there is something in the way to block the camera. If the developer reworks the camera this would be a good game.

This game deserves way more attention! I don't know if the blob is supposed to be scary or cute - somehow it's both and I love it. The open world is actually pretty large and detailed, the artwork is beautiful and human, and the game mechanics are surprisingly polished. It packs a lot of gameplay ideas into a small package. The story is cool too, it's mostly pretty abstract but I did laugh out loud a few times. If you like weird games definitely try this.

Such a strange and beautiful world filled with great puzzles and platforming. The writing within the esoteric emails and logs are a true highlight. A world with lots to read into. A game built with some real heart.

This game has promise. It could really scratch that itch of explore fun environments as a blob, solve some puzzles and grow stronger and gain new abilities. However, it is bogged down with poor movement and camera controls. The camera is either too close to the oil blob or else it is hovering above it looking down. You can never angle the camera in a way for you to view your surroundings effectively. When it comes to movement, you never move as fast as you want and changing direction feels like a chore. There is a dash button, however dashing around appears to reduce your size, which is frustrating when you get to a button you need to hit, but are too small to throw a blob at it. Could do with a lot of refinement to make it feel better to play.

Game has lots of promise. I love the art and visuals and the over concept of the game. However, the camera and controls make navigating this world a nightmare. I rarely get this frustrated over game controls, and it's a real shame because I like everything else about it. I don't see a reason why this is recommended to be played with a controller.
