Bought in knowing nothing other than it looked kinda cool. It's a product of it's time but I still had some fun figuring out how the controls worked. Found I had the best response time with EGA 16 in Windows and Linux, as this is a game from the early 90s reading the manual is required. The only real issue I had was in VGA 16 on Linux, the fire button (space) started working like a toggle (on/off) button rather than toggle (hold). I did have fun running past all the enemies in the open areas to find out how to kill the bosses, but some healing now and again would be neat. Maybe my blowing past the open sections enemies would have helped that?8 found this helpful
Deathbringer, developed by The Mystery Machine and Oxford Digital Enterprises and published by Strategy First, arrives on Steam as a revival of a classic early-1990s side-scrolling action title, preserving its original identity rather than reshaping it for modern sensibilities. This release functions less as a remake and more as a faithful restoration, running through emulation to retain the mechanics, pacing, and audiovisual character that defined its original incarnation. As a result, it offers players a direct window into a specific era of PC action design, where difficulty, atmosphere, and mechanical simplicity combined to create a demanding yet memorable hack-and-slash experience. The game casts players as Karn, a formidable barbarian warrior locked in conflict with a council of powerful and malicious wizards. In their attempt to destroy him, these sorcerers create a sentient demon blade known as Deathbringer, a weapon forged explicitly for Karn’s demise. Instead of falling victim to their scheme, Karn seizes the blade for himself, turning its dark power against its creators and embarking on a violent quest for vengeance. The premise is rooted firmly in classic fantasy tropes…2 found this helpful
