The Abbey - Director's cut

The presentation is quite good. The story is engaging, clearly inspired by Umberto Eco, well told, animated and voiced.. The gameplay, however, is poor. First bummer, the puzzles are of the pixel-hunting sort, having you scan landscapes with your mouse to find the little objects hidden in them that must be clicked to progress. Feedback on actions is useless; basically, the protagonist just says 'no." He refuses the most reasonable actions, so you must guess the precise way the writer wants you to perform each step, be that a less logical and more contrived way. Much worse yet: events, locations, actions and dialogue lines are not accessible until triggered by very specific events. As bad as this design already is, triggers are silent. There are no indications that anything changes anywhere as a result of what you do or say. Any other game would usually play a little animation to cue you in, but not this game. For all its verbosity, it fails to show you what matters most. Therefore, one must revisit all locations, to either spot a difference or retry previous actions that may or may not bear fruits this time around. It's utterly tedious. Counter-intuitive. Illogical. Before I could even step foot in the monastery, I had to perform a digital exorcism on my PC just to get The Abbey to launch. It took some tinkering with an old game, but once the technical spirits were appeased, the game ran smoothly enough. That initial struggle, however, felt like a fitting prelude to the experience ahead: a promise of effort that leads to a decidedly mixed result. This is a point-and-click adventure that wears its age like a heavy cassock. The setup is solid on paper—a murder mystery in a medieval abbey—but the execution is where the monks drop the script. The voice acting sounds like it was recorded by people who really wanted to be somewhere else. The art style tries for painterly but lands on "flat," with environments that lack atmosphere. The characters have no charisma and are thinly developed. I struggled to remember their names till the very end. The puzzles are mostly functional, but a few are so unfair they feel like a practical joke. The biggest offender is your constant reliance on your novice companion, a character so unbearable you'll wish the murder mystery was a double feature. A charming game, heavily inspired by Umberto Eco's The Name of the Rose. If you like games like Pentiment, this is for you.

It's an old school point and click, and... While not bad, I guess the setting really wasn't my jam.
