✦ AI summary

Demon Lord: Just a Block offers fun roguelike gameplay with an inventive build system that allows for creative experimentation, though its hybrid turn-based/real-time mechanic is awkward and unintuitive for many players. The game is well-balanced and visually polished, making it accessible to newer roguelike fans, but experienced players may find it lacks depth and narrative substance compared to other indie roguelikes. Most reviewers suggest it's worth picking up if you appreciate creative roguelike design and don't mind the unconventional control scheme.

Very cool! Demon Lord is technically a turn-based game, but some actions happen in real time. The way it’s implemented isn’t very intuitive at first, but you get used to it over time. The build system is really fun, and there’s enough variety to experiment with. It feels like you can create some completely broken builds or achieve some absolutely ridiculous levels of imbalance. There’s also Workshop support, although there aren’t many mods yet. Overall, it’s one of those rare games that feels somewhat similar to Crypt of the NecroDancer, but without the rhythm-based gameplay. If you enjoy this kind of gameplay, you’ll probably love Demon Lord. Babel of Ystilia is another game you’ll probably really enjoy, and it’s also a hidden gem right now.

decent. The gameplay is fun, but feels like a 7/10 game to me, partly because of the inflation of quality of indie roguelikes nowadays. When it comes to "tactics" or strategy games, specially turn based, I would rather pay a couple bucks more for a game with good lore and story and a world to dive in. whereas this game focuses on quick sessions with a predictable map, as in it has all the basic events of a common roguelite map but no big surprise.

If you are reasonably well-versed in traditional roguelikes, then this probably won't do much for you. It strips out all of the stats and skills and complexity leaving just the most basic version of play. It's accessible, looks good, and taps into modern ideas, so it's a decent entrypoint into trad roguelikes if you've never played one.

Extremely fun game. Based on how "simple" it looks and plays, I'm looking forward to tons of future content/expansions.

Very fun roguelike made with lots of love, held back by an extremely awkward core mechanic of "not really turn-based". It was ALMOST one of my favorites, but the inconsistency got to me. ✅ Pros

When it works, the combat feels very satisfying
Really well balanced, with a good progression system and a nice amount of content
Power ups and weapons are interesting and fun, roguelike/roguelite done right (FINALLY)
Made with love, with lots of references and very rewarding secrets/collections
❌ Cons

The core mechanic of "not really turn-based" is very ambitious, but feels awful. Everything moves when you move (take a turn), with the addition of you being able to dodge if you're quick enough, or parry if you walk into their attack zone and tap in their direction. However, it doesn't work the same for all enemies and effects, which makes it feel incredibly inconsistent, frustrating, and impossible to master. Some enemies move on different timelines, some enemies move twice (or more) per turn, and some just defy the laws of parry/dodge by awkwardly jumping(?) on you. This mechanic alone takes it from feeling like a complete game, to…
