The Little Tomb: The Maholova Club and the Search for a Dead Body is an unconventional story-driven adventure developed by CAVYHOUSE and published by PLAYISM on Steam. Known for supporting distinctive independent titles, PLAYISM often releases games that blend unusual storytelling with experimental design, and this project reflects that philosophy through its eccentric tone and narrative-driven gameplay. Rather than presenting a traditional mystery filled with dramatic crime-solving mechanics, the game offers a quirky and surreal investigation that unfolds through conversations, exploration, and unexpected character interactions. The premise revolves around a strange situation involving the Maholova Club and the mysterious disappearance—or possible discovery—of a dead body. The protagonist becomes involved in the investigation and must navigate a web of unusual characters and strange events in order to uncover the truth. The narrative structure deliberately avoids a straightforward detective format. Instead, the story gradually reveals fragments of information through dialogue, environmental observations, and interactions that often mix humor with darker themes. Very cute game and a good way to do some light Japanese study. 楽しみ遊びます。 いつもありがとうございます、CAVYHOUSEさん1 found this helpful
So the premise of this game is that you're a living burial mound who is looking for a dead body to bury inside them. The trailer juxtaposes this premise with a cute story of Kofun, the main character, making their first friend, a haniwa child called Haniwa, in this beautiful park area that kind of brings to mind the likes of Eternal Egg or Fragrance Park in its design. Of course, I was intrigued - like, what the ♥♥♥♥ is this game? Some sort of abstract fairly tale or parable like Night on the Galactic Railroad? Something extremely strange and tonally clashing? Something darkly comedic? Turns out, it's none of those, it's a lot more straightforward and down-to-earth, but it is very well written. Gameplay-wise it's extremely linear for the most part, railroading you from one story beat to the next, but there is the exception of a couple of sidequests and a surprisingly large amount of flavor text - which incidentally fits in nicely with the story's central theme of personal growth, as Kofun's inner monologue gets more detailed and confident each time an object or location offers new insights. You don't really play it for the gameplay though. Or the visuals, which start out as strik…
I did this review since the game doesn't have this many and I wanted to support the team who has made it. I enjoyed the game, but I think there are some things that could be improved: - During cutscenes, I think it would be helpful to add an option that will lock the dialogues without giving you the possibility to skip them (so you can only proceed after the characters have finished their entire sentence), I know there’s a full backlog of the chat during those scenes (and thanks for that), but sometimes I missclicked and interrupted the flow of those scenes, so I think it would be useful to have that option (obviously, you’ll be able to choose whether to enable it or not) for people like me who are dumb or simply just want to have a "fixed flow" of those conversations; - I think it would be good to change the colour of the icons you interact with (they're all green circles right now) to distinguish the "main ones" (the ones that make you go on with the story) from the "side ones" (the one that contains dialogue with details regarding japanese archaeology or simply details related to our characters that are not necessarily to know, but guys like me like to read), because sometime…
"My dream is to one day find a perfect dead body for me and become a great tomb!" The game started strong with lines like the one above. The story follows Kofun as he discovers more about himself and the world around him in a more positive way thanks to his new friends. I thought it was cute, somewhat bittersweet, and the right mix of fun and weird. You get to learn about some real history and Haniwa (clay figures) in the process too. Although the translation had some typos, sometimes the text would go off the screen where I couldn't read it, and I had to lower the graphics settings, it was charming and I really enjoyed the whole experience. Overall, the game took me about 4 hours to finish and get all of the achievements.
Really charming game with the best story I've played this year
