About this version

Outcast 1.1 has been recompiled from the original source code and improved to run smoothly on today's computers. The main improvements compared to the original version are: multithreaded voxel renderer for higher performances, software bilinear filtering on polygonal meshes, part of the HUD redesigned to match higher resolutions, new high-resolution sky paintings, new launcher, native support of xbox gamepad, user-friendly controller configuration, a lot of bugs fixed and improved stability.

Story

In 2007, the U.S. government successfully sends a probe to an alien world in a parallel universe. As the probe is transmitting video images of the world, an alien life form discovers the probe and damages it, causing a disruptive backlash of energy to form a black hole threatening Earth. Former U.S. Navy SEAL Cutter Slade is given the job of escorting three scientists (William Kauffmann, Anthony Xue and Marion Wolfe) on a mission to this alien world to recover the probe and stop the threat. Arriving in this alien world, Cutter is separated from the other scientists and is hailed by the natives as their messiah, the Ulukai.

✦ AI summary

Outcast 1.1 is a genuinely remarkable hidden gem from 1999 that still holds up remarkably well today, featuring an immersive open world with a stunning orchestral soundtrack, organic voxel-based visuals, and charming depth that players find magical and atmospheric even decades later. However, the game is prone to bugs ranging from minor graphical glitches to game-breaking issues that can prevent completion, alongside dated controls and lack of modern conveniences like quest markers, so players strongly recommend saving regularly and keeping backup saves.

Great game from 1999. Even today it holds up. Recommend.

A very good game. One of my favourites. I played it back in 1999 and in 2026 again. It had bugs back then and it has bugs now. Some of them won't let you finish the game at all permanantly. Still love it though.

Absolutely outstanding and magical journey, with a top notch soundtrack. I still can't believe they were able to pull off something like that with 1999 hardware. Back when I was a kid I only played it a bit, and boy am I glad I decided to pick it up again years later. That being said, I'd advise to save regularly, and keep copies of your saved games. Outcast is prone to bug out sometimes, so your mileage may vary - I fortunately only stumbled upon a single semi softlock, which I was able to escape fairly easily. With the game of such scope and ambition, packed with many optional quests to do, I can definitely let it slide.

Outcast 1.1 is a genuinely remarkable piece of gaming history — the open world of Adelpha feels alive in a way that still holds up, with NPCs running their own daily routines, a rich orchestral soundtrack recorded by the Moscow Symphony Orchestra, and a story full of charm and unexpected depth. The voxel engine gives the environments an organic, almost painterly quality that no polygon game of the era could match. That said, go in with realistic expectations: the controls are clunky by modern standards, there's no quest marker or map to speak of, and I did encounter a handful of graphical glitches and save-related bugs that required me to be diligent about saving often. If you can make peace with its age and quirks, what you get in return is one of the most immersive and atmospheric worlds ever built in a video game. For the price, it's an easy recommendation — just know you're signing up for a classic, not a polished remaster.
