I thought *Shadow Warrior Classic* was just another old-school FPS from the '90s that I'd play for a few minutes and then forget about. I was wrong. The graphics are dated. The controls can feel rough. The level design is absolutely insane. But somewhere along the way, you stop caring about all of that because the game has so much personality. You play as Lo Wang, a character who somehow manages to turn every situation into a ridiculous one-liner while running around with guns, a sword, and enough explosions to make subtlety completely irrelevant. The gameplay is fast, brutal, and chaotic. Enemies come at you from everywhere, secrets are hidden in the strangest places, and the levels constantly seem to ask, "What if we put something completely ridiculous here?" And somehow, it works. What I love most is how unapologetically '90s this game is. It doesn't try to be realistic or cinematic. It just gives you weapons, enemies, strange jokes, ridiculous levels, and says, "Go have fun." Shadow Warrior Classic is one of those old FPS games that reminds me how much personality games from this era could have. I play as Lo Wang, a ninja working his way through a strange version of Japan filled with enemies, traps and ridiculous situations. The story is not something I take very seriously, but that is part of the charm. The game is loud, violent and full of stupid jokes, while underneath all of that there is a surprisingly ambitious shooter that gives me a lot more to interact with than I expected from a game released in 1997. The combat is still the main reason I enjoy it. I have a katana for getting up close, shurikens, Uzis, a shotgun style weapon, explosives and several other weapons that make the fights feel much more varied than simply picking one gun and using it for the whole game. The katana is especially satisfying because getting close to an enemy and cutting them down feels very different from using the firearms. I also like that some weapons have different firing options, which gives the arsenal more usefulness than I normally expect from a shooter this old.
