Outcast - Second Contact

If you're looking for a "good" game don't play this… --- How can I say that and still recommend it? This game is a piece of gaming history preserved as a remake, along with its original audio and voice recordings. It's a very OK game, but it's not particularly good by modern standards. But it is an interesting look into early open world game development and a nostalgia trip for those who lived through the 1990's gaming era. It's by no means a terrible game, but its main claim to fame is having done a lot of things first. Unfortunately in the decades since than, everything that has learned from this game has mostly done it better. --- Open world? Yes, but a lot of it is empty and bland. NPC's that have interactive conversations? Sure, clunky dialogue and compressed audio quality. Story: Claptrap and nonsense. Controls: rudimentary. Stealth: You can pretend it has that, it will certainly claim there is. Gunplay: Minimal ammo, bullet sponge enemies. Camera: It hates you and your dreams. Just remember, this is a remake of a game that came out in 1999, and it preserves the original audio and gameplay, with all of its flaws. It's mainly a graphical improvement and even then it's not …

Outcast presents a short, open world 3rd-person shooter with questing elements. I played the original in 1999 and was struck then by 5 aspects that stuck with me: voxel graphics, gunplay, voice acting, action-movie cliche story elements (especially the time-travel twists) and the music. Revisiting this game in 2026 via the 2017 remaster, it's a bit sobering to realize it's been 27 years since I first played the game and already 9 years since this remaster was created. The music still touches me and I enjoyed the prettier graphics. The gunplay, acting & story remain serviceable. If you're looking for a curious filler (17 hour to 97% main question completion and 77% side-quest completion) with an eye toward one of the first open-world 3rd person shooters, give it a try.

Replaying the original (10/10 !) I love so much in this updated version, all *very* good so far. ( Note: the sequel to this, "Outcast A New Beginning" is a truly fantastic game, one of the best.) Months ago had a problem Second Contact with a black screen starting, but now no more: specially with Win 11 Pro and drivers updated. In my case, without using Admin. rights at all, though couldn't hurt if necessary. I played this game very recently after it sat in my library for quite some time. Randomly decided to play it and was honestly not that interested at first, but it somehow got me hooked. Despite the complete lack of QoL, which makes sense given the era it was originally released, even though Second Contact is a remake of the original, the humor, dialogue, and actual plot kept me going. So, naturally, I just started blasting and hyper-looting whatever I saw like a manic space scavenger. BTW, the jetpack was completely pointless, but it is what it is. Very nice overall. let me tell you what, i played this game, gosh danged.

Surprisingly fun RPG that gives me Star Wars KOTOR vibes but with real-time combat that has all the heartfelt, classic early '00s jankiness that we know and love. A military commander, sent through a interdimensional portal that's gone haywire to try to fix it on the "other side", gets swept up into a clash between a tyrannical empire and a rebel faction. You, Cutter Slade, are tasked with assisting the rebel forces against the evil Kroax and in return they will help you find the scientists who you were assigned to protect. So far the story itself seems pretty standard, and the way its told is pretty good. Graphically, aside from some bad textures here and there, the game looks great for its age and runs silky smooth. I'll take it over 25 FPS UnrealSlop with extra blur filters anyday. I can already tell this will be one that I see through to the end.
