Balatro scoring meets an inventory management game. Looks great and plays smoothly, but they forgot to make the actual game fun. The "puzzle" of tetrising your pieces gets easier as you play as the sell box becomes more and more square until it's literally a square.. which makes fitting pieces very easy. There's not much reason to add new objects as you start with almost enough to fill a box. That's as anticlimactic a gameplay loop as you can imagine. The only twists are which tarot cards and contracts you find (jokers and relics) and most of them are pretty ho-hum. Only one difficultly level and no variation in challenges don't help. 5/10. They got so close to a really great game, but lost the central cohesive force along the way. Unless this idea completely speaks to you, I'd say you should pass on it. Also performance is awful and it will max out your graphics card.

It is very rare these days that a game manages to grab my attention. This is a great game, with depth.

On balance, I've enjoyed my time with the game, and I would give it a soft recommendation if you can get it at a good discount. That said, I find long-term appeal to be limited, because there just aren't enough interesting or strategic decisions, exacerbated by the lack of clarity on some key game mechanics. Typically, RNG is utterly dominant in whether you can get off the ground. Either it gives you modifiers you can work with, or it doesn't. Either it gives you decent options in the shop, or it doesn't. On most runs, it's hard to feel like you're really planning, strategising, or optimising, when in fact 90% of what you are doing is simply taking the only feasible steps that the RNG metes out to you. Then, if you get some luck in the early rounds, it often feels like you can sail through several "cycles" without needing to give it a moment's thought... But when you get to the final boss, RNG becomes even more decisive. The enemy will randomly nerf a swathe of the game mechanics, so your scoring can easily drop by several orders of magnitude in a single swoop. On the other hand, you might barely be impacted. The game is very simple, but one you figure out the gamble it gets crazy satisfying. I may try to get all the achievements just for fun.
