About The Morrigan

✦ AI summary

The Morrigan is a VR action game where you battle through handcrafted dungeons with swords, axes, and bows to stop a vengeful goddess from collecting an ancient debt. Featuring visceral melee combat with physics-based reactions, time-bending arrow mechanics, intricate puzzles, and a full arsenal of weapons, it delivers both gripping storytelling and relentless arena combat challenges.

Step into this world of beautiful stylised graphics and explore striking, handcrafted environments - torch in one hand, big axe in the other. Gameplay is a rich, multi-layered experience, with surprising charm and heart.

Features:

Dramatic combat system:
This is what VR swordplay should be: free-flowing attacks and blocks that allow you to feel the rhythm of combat. Dynamic physics-based melee combat delivers a reaction to every hit.

Can it still be bullet time if it’s with arrows?
Bend time to dodge arrows or strike them out of the air - if you’re fast enough.

Swordplay that’s easy to learn yet challenging to master
Chain blocks and attacks unleash devastating counter attacks that can turn the tide of battle in your favour. Five different enemy attack styles to get your teeth into.

And what would a dungeon be without puzzles?
This new game has got you covered. Keys, switches, hidden rooms - the whole enchilada.

And if heart-stopping peril is your thing...

This game will have you dodging terrifying traps (that you can then use against your enemies) and climbing across death-defying drops.

No time for questing?
Drop into the arena and enjoy wave after wave of enemies - and unlock weapons to use in the main campaign or arena.

Looking for story?

The basics: a desperate king strikes a deal with the Morrigan to get him out of a tight spot, sacrificing his (unborn) daughter’s freedom. Time passes, and the daughter eventually succeeds the throne. The Morrigan returns to call in the debt… unless you can stop her, that is. But she is a god, so good luck with that!

A whole armoury of weapons

Tool up with swords, axes, shields, bows - play in whatever style you like, with over 20 weapons to choose from.

A range of locomotion options
Free locomotion, teleport or both supported. Left- or right-handed? Not a problem.

With the VR library being what it is, the first positive thing to say about The Morrigan is that it's a complete game. It isn't an empty sandbox, or a tech demo, It has a beginning, it has an end, and it won't try to devour too much of your time between. Combat is simple enough; keep your weapon between an incoming strike and yourself and you'll block it. Hit an enemy's weapon or shield before you hit them -- and they'll block it. There's a degree of "momentum read" for damage values, it seems, but I rarely struck below a weapon's maximum damage with fairly modest strikes throughout the playthrough. Enemy attacks are only so varied, and so your biggest concern will be numbers. Everything feels responsive enough for me to have enjoyed most of it. There are puzzles here and here, but the vast majority of them are based around navigation -- usually climbing. You'll have keys for doors, and some better, more intricate puzzles scattered across a few levels. The atmosphere is great. I've been fairly personally exhausted by the "low-poly" look in many games, but this one manages to integrate it enough into the world that it doesn't feel out of place. Some of the lighting effects are st…

Not very fun, generic combat, boring puzzles, and somewhat buggy physics. Items disappear very quickly if you drop them, occasionally resulting in a softlock from puzzle items disappearing. The final mission is the worst one by far, using new mechanics and making you used ranged weapons for the entire thing. There are clearly some decent ideas put into it, but the execution was bad. Not worth buying.

Great game, it hits all the right spots of a proper VR game! Controls seem to be a bit off, at least on Index (but it’s not game breaking only a bit annoying) and the game lacks physics for interaction with most of the items on the levels, as you can pick only weapons and healing items/gold, but the sense of exploration in VR is incredible. Hope the developers release sequel.

This is a real good vr fantasy game. The graphics are not realistic, but beautiful. They reminded me a bit of For The King, one of my favourite games. The fighting is satisfying, the atmosphere is haunting and the bowplay is really well done. I was really immersed. It is a short game, but is really pulled me in. At first, I had problems with motion sickness, but that got better with time. Really great indie-game. Highly recommended.
