Free Steam games, ranked by who is actually playing them

Live concurrent players, refreshed twice a day. Catalogue counts measured 2026-09-22. By playze.io.

Steam has 21,564 free-to-play games, which sounds like abundance and is not. Of the 500 most popular, only 121 have more than a thousand people playing at once, and only six clear a hundred thousand. Below that the tail empties quickly: by rank 400 a typical free game has a few dozen players in it.

For a free multiplayer game that matters more than the review score — an empty lobby is an unplayable game. So this list is ordered by live players rather than by rating, and the number is shown so you can judge it yourself.

Player counts come from Steam and are refreshed every twelve hours, so they are a recent snapshot rather than this second. A dash means we have no count for that game.

Free to play is not the same as free to keep

Everything above is permanently free: no purchase, no time limit, usually monetised through cosmetics or a battle pass. Separately, paid games are given away outright for a few days at a time — you claim them and keep them forever. Those are worth catching while they run, and we track them as they appear.

Method

The population is every game in our catalogue that Steam reports as free to play — 21,564 on 2026-09-22. The ranking is by live concurrent players, which we read from Steam and refresh twice daily. The head-and-tail counts in the opening paragraph were taken across the 500 most popular of those games; below rank 500 the counts only fall further, so they are an optimistic read of how much of the catalogue is alive.
