What Steam players say

A House of Many Doors is a narrative-focused role-playing game developed and published by Pixel Trickery that places players inside one of the most imaginative settings found in the indie RPG genre. The adventure unfolds within the House, a sprawling extradimensional labyrinth that absorbs fragments of countless worlds and cultures, creating a place where reality feels fluid and unpredictable. Rather than presenting a familiar fantasy kingdom, the game embraces surrealism, introducing cities, civilizations, and creatures that challenge expectations at every turn. Traveling across this strange realm aboard a towering mechanical train gives the experience a distinctive identity from the very beginning, immediately establishing exploration and discovery as its central themes. The game's greatest achievement is its remarkable emphasis on storytelling. Featuring hundreds of thousands of words of dialogue and descriptive writing, nearly every encounter contributes to expanding the mythology of the House. The Steam description highlights an enormous collection of unique locations, and each one tells its own story through memorable quests, unusual inhabitants, and unexpected moral dilemma…
Sunless Seas / skies but with turn based ftl lite combat.
This game takes up so much space in my head. I love the vibes and the simple gameplay that really focuses the narrative and impressionistic elements of the game. I have memorized the music, I think about the art often, and experiencing this game really innovated for me the possibility of what narratives can be in games. Great stuff.
Why have I never reviewed this???? It's crazy how many of the games that I thought were the most brilliant, I forget to review. Sorry about that. Anyway, this game oozes the spirit of Lovecraft in a way that few people could ever dream of. It isn't trying to copy a lovecraft story or merely take the aesthetics, it is like the essence of distilled cosmic horror in a unique setting with brilliant writing. The combat isn't the greatest though (and not something you should even attempt for many hours). Unique and just great.
Worth it. So very worth it.
No*
The writing is good, everything else is hit or miss, mostly miss for me. There is interesting stuff, but buried under "meh" gameplay; the worst being traversing the House, which is very repetitive. As far as I am aware the first 15 minutes is representative of a large portion of the experience, hence the low play time. I could see some enjoying this, but unlike Sunless Sea/Skies (games very similar to this), there is not much here OTHER than the writing.
