The Game
Within the Backrooms is a liminal exploration game with light puzzle elements. Use tools you find and mysterious floppy disks to traverse the world, uncover the secrets of the Backrooms, and find out why you're here. Try not to get lost in the winding maze of the Lobby, explore the abandoned and decrepit Mall, relive childhood memories in the unsettling Playground, and experience sublimity in the placid, yet haunting, Pool.
The World
Explore a vast world of liminal spaces. Providing an uncanny nostalgia where reality isn't quite the same. Featuring 4 unique and diverse main floors and many different-sub floors to find, there's secrets lurking around every corner. Given nothing, you must be adventurous and clever. Question everything you see and everything they say.
The Graphics
Within the Backrooms pays homage to a time where edges were jagged and textures pixelate from afar. The game replicates the style of the PS1 era and plays in the same aspect ratio.

Alright. [i]Within the Backrooms[/i] has an interesting premise for a liminal spaces game inasmuch as it leans into the PSX aesthetic 100%. Which is undeniably cool in my opinion. However, I have two issues (mmm...really four issues) with this game that diminished the experience for me to the point where I really have no interest in continuing to play the game. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3762203026 For one, there is zero sense of tension. At all. I prefer a monster free liminal spaces experience, which this is. Unfortunately, and possibly because of the choice to use PSX as the thing driving the visuals in this, it ends up really not being interesting, and rather than levels where finding the exit is the experience, this feels a bit cheap. The first level is set up as an actual maze, but it's small and uncomplicated. You find your way out and end up in a shopping mall. Here, it relies on item puzzles to find your way out. And this is where we get to my second issue. The items are bugged. Or the backpack interface is bugged. Take your pick. Either way, I picked up the coin needed to obtain the key.
